Every 3 - 4 years a console is released, whether its from Sony,Sega, nintendo or the newcomers Microsoft, surrounding it is what? hype? yes hype, although how do we measure the success of a console? is it how many people think its good? is it the quality of games? is it the amount of games and units sold? or is it that word, yes MONEY? you decide.

There is no doubt in anyones mind that a consoles success is always based around money, as it stands sony are the market leader at this present moment, with nintendo and microsoft probably going to battle for the rest of the market share, lets take a a trip down memory lane...

The playstation first saw light in europe in 1995, many people doubted Sony, come on people admit it!, people were buying their shiny new Sega Saturn console and looking down their noses at the playstation, but what they did not know was that sony was like a massive time bomb waiting to go off and its aim was to wipe out that sega saturn, think about it, the saturn was released around a year before the playstation but somehow it managed to be a total flop? why?
Because sony produced the better games, it hard more support and made sega look like nobody, many people began to see what all the hype was about the Saturn, it was about nothing, and in came the playstation and stole its thunder, kind of a sad ending for the Saturn, i used to play on my uncles and loved it, i couldn't understand how it had gone so wrong!
But he was left with his now worthless sega Saturn, as many people on these very forums may have felt totally let down by it, in the end lack of support had dragged the saturn right down until no one bothered with it anymore.

The Saturns Success Rating? 5/10, it seemed doomed for success, but in the end a Rival newcomer stole Segas shining light!

Lets take a closer look at the playstation, 1995, with the saturn now down on its knee's Sony had all of their power in their hands, and they wanted to make sure that everyone wanted their console, they signed up many top quality software developers, such as EA,Codemasters,Polyphony didgital and many more!
The Playstation impressed almost everyone at the time, and even now it would be quite rare not to see a playstation in someones home becuase of its massive success, of course sony wanted to make money, but were they more bothered about money than the gaming public?
What do you mean i hear you ask?
Well PAL and more importantly black borders, we get the big lovely widescreen version for some of our games yet we pay more than most other countries? why is this? the fact is that in some circumstances we were getting totally ripped off and getting games 17.5% slower than our NTSC cousins, although this problem now is slowly being cured many people are still very unhappy with companies like sony who only now seem to be encouraging developers to give us our beloved 60hz mode! give us what we deserve sony!
Although sony let us down in that aspect they more than made up for it with top quality titles on their platform, namingly the Tekken series, and not forgetting Gran Turismo 1+2, people loved these games and although some didn't the majority of gamers knew that they had to have a playstation just for these games, many of the games such as tekken and GT are still going strong today and noot forgetting the amazing final fantasy series!, 7 years on, and i ope their success contiunes in this next generation.
The playstation is now beginning to see the end of its long life, was it worth it? in a word, totally!, if it wasn't for the playstation where would we be now? probably still playing sega's arcade games, although they are great gamers want more choice and thats exactly what sony's wonder did, it mixed arcade fun with simulation, and it worked!
The playstation was one of the most successful consoles ever, and sony should be given a massive amount of credit for all of their hardwork and making the world Playstation actually mean something. Great!

Sucess Rating 10/10, a great all round machine, that to this day is going strong, all credit to sony for a great gaming console!

Next in 1996 The Nintendo 64 was released, hoping to steal some of the playstations light, it had a great stab at trying, but lack of third party games and expensive games cost nintendo in the end, many people thought nintendo would mve to CD's but instead they were too worried about piracy and thus used Cartridges which had limitations such as lack of FMV and they were very expensive.
It wasn't all bad for nintendo, though, the quality of their pad was probably one of the best for years, it was the console for multiplayer games, Classics such as Goldeneye,Perfect Dark, Mario 64 and Zelda, nintendo fans were not going to be disappointed but it just lacked some of the games that Sony had to offer and it really hurt nintendo in the long run. Games took too long to be converted to PAL and many were often slower, which annoyed people, the overall cost of console at launch and games was very expensive as well, were nintendo trying to use peoples money for success? i'll let you decide that.
One thing is for sure, this time Ninetendo have learn't their lesson With the Gamecube and on May 3rd their campagin to steal back some of Sony's light will begin, good luck to them!

Nintendo 64's Success Rating 7/10, a Good console with some good games, lack of third party developers hurt nintendo in the long run. Lets see what the gamecube can do!

In 1999 Sega launched the Dreamcast, starting off a nex-generation of consoles, moving into the 128-bit era.
Hoping this time to last longer than the saturn sega threw in everything they had this time, unltimately it was a good little machine, but what caused its death after just over 2 years? Sony's newest console the Playstaion2, many people were a little worried as to the impact sony would have and decided to hold out while missing out on some top quality games for Sega's Dreamcast, it promised us online gaming which did work but failed because many games lost the online feature and slow porgress with dreamkey 2 caused it to be an almost total flop in europe, with games such as Quake 3, Phantasy Star online amoung others, games like Shenmue, Virtua Tennis and Sonic were strong single and multiplayer games, Sega had to reduce the price of the Dreamcast to try and attract more people, it worked but it wasn't enough, developers decided to cancel games such as half life and shift development onto other conolses such as the PS2 which left sega almost the only developer for its console. In 2001 Sega announced it would cease production of the dreamcast and become a software developer, a shame for sega, but now we will see just how great they really are on other platforms, so not all is lost!

success Rating 8/10, Some good internet games, Good acrade style graphics, but the name Sony ended its life too quickly, a shame as it deserved so much more.

Sony's playstation 2 arrived in 2000 and with a bit of a bumpy launch due to lack of units has managed to shift a staggering 20 million units worldwide with shortages still apparent even now, it already has established its lead in this next gen war, what does the future hold for sony?, well only time will tell!
The online plans are in the place and 2002 seems bright for sony in europe with games like MGS2,FFX , the Getaway amoung many others, but is it going to be sonys year all round?
Two new fighters will enter the ring this year, the Xbox on march 14th and the Gamecube on May 3rd, both already enjoying success in the states both are hoping to carry that success over to europe, but with the xbox's hefty price tag, will it be able to shift enough units? and with nintendo releasing their console in may is it too late?
The xbox boasts great graphics and games, as does nintendo's gamecube with a small £170 price tag, nintendo seem to have learn't thei lesson.

2002 is going to be a great year, lets hope in 3-4 years time the PS2,Gamecube and Xbox will all be as successful as possbile, Happy Gaming!
