The storyline is very original in my opinion. The city of Monstropolis is populated by a wide variety of monsters. These are the monsters that hide in your closet and scare you during the night. But they aren't doing it for fun. They're doing it because it's their job. You see Monstropolis is powered by the screams of children and Monsters Inc. is the name of the company that sends the monsters through to our world to scare children and capture their screams. James P. Sullivan (or Sully to his friends) is the best scarer in the company, in fact he is heading towards the all-time scare record. Together with his sidekick Mike Wazowski he collects more screams than any other monster in Monsters Inc. His closest rival is the sneaky Randall, a devious monster who will stoop to anything for not just the scare record, but control of Monsters, Inc.
When a child accidentally gets through into the monster world, its up to Sully and Mike to get her home safely. But thats easier said than done because human children are toxic to monsters!
This is another piece of genius from Disney and Pixar. Although it doesn't surpass the mighty Toy Story 2, it does give it a run for its money. It also surpasses anything produced by other studios, even the fantastic Shrek.
The film is a success because of the excellent voice cast. John Goodman and Billy Crystal provide the voices for Sully and Mike respectively, and are outstanding. Especially Crystal who manages to sound as though he is improvising most of the time. Steve Buscemi is also suitably slimy as the underhanded Randall.
The animation is outstanding and better than anything that has been seen before. Special mention must go to the animation of Sully. His fur is so realistic, you have to keep reminding yourself that this is animated!
Overall...this film demands your attention. Forget that it is primarily a kids film. There is more than enough here for everyone to enjoy. 9/10
