When we think of gaming we usually compare it to the past, and don’t look too much into the future. We compare Playstation 2 to Playstation, and GameCube to Nintendo 64, but what if we thought more about what the future of gaming will be like. In this article, I will give my perspective on what the future will be like.

The future of gaming eh? Nobody knows exactly what it will be like, but I think I have an idea, Gaming will always get better, and the more technologically advanced the world gets, the faster and more powerful it will grow each time. For example, Nintendo (NES) was 8 bits, then as technology came, Super Nintendo(SNES) and Sega Genesis arrived at 16 bits each, and once again as technology grew came Playstation sizing up at 32 bits, and Next Nintendo 64 at, well 64 bits. As you can see, each system has doubled in capabilities over the years, into Dreamcast, Playstation 2, and GameCube matching up at 128 bits. I believe that through the years, the systems will double or even triple in power, while the size of the system will eventually grow smaller, and smaller, and even smaller, until possibly someday, you will be able to buy a system that is as small as mp3 players, and you even will be able to download games off the internet.

As for what the games will be like, I believe that as graphics get better, there will be more fighting games and first person shooters, and less RPG’s, or at least they will be in different styles than the traditional role playing games. Why? Well, I believe that although two hit RPG’s for the Dreamcast (Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 2) have excellent graphics, role playing games are not known for showing off graphics, and as competition grows, showing off will be a big factor to win battles in the gaming industry. But, if RPG’s continue to be successful, I believe they will start using different styles with more exploring and the battles may be fought in a completely different way. And why more fighting games? Okay, people, just look at Tekken TAG Tournament. The graphics just totally kick, uh butt. The game is just amazing, and as graphics and power grows, cooler, and more moves will be able to be done, which will allow for better gameplay and more replay value. And we all know that blowing up stuff is fun, and since we can’t (well we can, but most of us won’t) do it in real life, as the games begin to look more real, they will feel as if it were, and will equal in stature to actually killing some people (that was a joke, it will actually be better, because nobody will get hurt, and it will be way easier. Hee hee.)

Now we move on to the game cartridges/disks etc. As you can see, throughout the years, more and more data can be stored in the cartridges/disk etc. (from now on, we’ll call it the "host") which leads to longer, more involved games. So, the farther into the future we go, the more dramatic, scary, funny, etc. the games will get by adding speech, and with more flexible characters. Also, the games will most likely get longer. Now back to the "hosts". As you may have already known, the GameCube is going to use mini-disks, which are much smaller than CD’s and DVD’s. As the industry continues, the disks will most likely get smaller, but still be able to hold as much information as before, and as I said earlier in this article, someday we may be able to even download them. We may possibly just have to upload them into the system once, and they are there permanently.

As for cost, I believe it could go either way. They could get more expensive, and they could get less expensive. If the consoles get smaller and easier to make, they could become cheap, or because such advanced technology is used, they could get more expensive. All that we can do is hope for the best.

Now, I will just put together some miscellaneous things for the future of gaming. Could the consoles end up being wireless? Or even built into special T.V.’s? Will there be controllers that can adjust to your hands? Will there be home virtual reality systems? All of my questions are unpredictable, and there are many more points that I missed, but there is one main point: Gaming keeps getting better and better, and will continue to do so as long as it lasts.

Nice post there, Rickman. It's good to see a newbie stick to the point of forums like this, as even most regulars go off the point completely. When you become a regular, post things like this in FOG prime.
