Uplink is probably one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. It is exactly the kind of game I’ve been looking for.

The best way to describe Uplink is to ask if you have seen the film, The Net with Sandra Bullock. If you have, then you know what to expect. Basically it is a game of hacking. In the game, you chose your jobs from a message board, and then you have to do what it asks you to do, whether that is to hack a computer and destroy a file, copy a file and email it to a person, change a record on a database, etc.

With every job you complete, you make more money, which allows you to buy better equipment, which allows you do harder jobs, which pay better money, to get better equipment…

And so on and so forth basically your aim is to complete each of the jobs you take on.

To complete a job you have to hack into a computer. To do this you first have to bounce your connection through as many computers as possible to slow down the computer from tracing your IP address. Then you use your password checker to work out the password aka Catherine Zeta Jones in Entrapment at the beginning!

Next you have to do whatever the job requires you to do. To begin with you just have to delete a file or copy one to you hard drive. But as you progress, the jobs get a lot harder.

The third thing for you to do is to cover up your tracks; you must remove all your tracks, by deleting the logs of you. All the servers you bounce through create a log of you bouncing through them. So you must delete a log from at least one site, to stop someone from tracing the logs back to you.

Then finally you must email the company who gave you the job to tell them it is complete. This may sound very tedious and boring but believe me it is absolutely brilliant, and it is very scary when you can see them tracing you and you are quickly trying to download and save the file, before they find you and you’re out of the game. You will find your mouse waiting over the disconnect button so as soon as the file has been deleted you can quickly connect. This is extremely tense and you WILL find yourself screaming at your computer to hurry up, and you WILL find your hands shaking because you came so near to being detected. When you have this tracing feature on, it reminds me of Goldeneye when that programmer is tracing Boris (is that his name, I cant remember) through the world, and it end up in Cuba. It is these things that make the game so brilliant, because it reminds you so much of different films, that you feel it is real.

So now I come on to my next point: immersion. This is one of the most immersive games I have ever played. It is so immersive in fact, that you can really become the hacker, and you immediately feel part of this internet world. It is so effective that (as mentioned in the PC Gamer review of the game) the PC Gamer editor closed down the program, as he thought he actually was accessing a hacking service! I’m telling you this game is brilliant. Even if you don’t want to fork out only £15!!!!!!!!! for the full version, just download the demo (it is also on the PC GAMER CD and DVD) and enjoy the immediate delights that this game brings.
Form What I described It may sound like the game is a bit repetitive and will get boring but on the contrary the game gets better as you play it. You just get more and more involved and end up loving every minute of the game. The AI of computer is brilliant, and you really can believe you are up against a proper computer mainframe.

The music of the game is subtle, but very atmospheric. It really enhances the tension of the game.

Now have I covered everything? Oh you need the web address to be able to get it, it’s www.introversion.co.uk I must make this point clear this is from an amateur programmer, so you can only get it from the above website. Don’t let the fact it isn’t made by a big named company put you off though, because it is brilliant. And once you start playing, you won’t care who made it, you just want to hack the next computer. Oh if you have morpheus, you can download the full game from there, but that’s breaking the law, and is not very nice.

Oh one point. Some may feel that the content is inappropriate with you framing people and hacking computers, as this is against the law, so bear that in mind. BUT this is a wonderful game, and I wish you all would go out and buy it.

Thanks CD
