The riot police still acted, however, on a tip-off (or by monitoring the internet) and pretty much wasted a lot of time and money confronting the self confessed nerds with their 'toys'.

Over-reaction by the riot police just highlights how stupid their laws actually are.
As usual, it's not a case of which one you'd rather have, it's how much of each. The UK isn't free from control, after all, demos etc have to be properly organised and even here un-authorised gatherings are illegal.
But probably equally as important is the nature of the populus and how they treat each other/behave.

I didnt know protests were banned in Singapore but I'm happy with everything else being banned.
One thing you'll notice is at the tourist shops theres tshirts saying Singapore is a "fine" city. And displays the things banned and how much the fine is for.
The streets are very clean, everything looks nice, what I like about Singapore is that you can be out in the city at 1am and feel completely safe. You see they dont have chavs in the streets, people coming out the pubs starting fights and all that.
With thanks to The World's Stupidest Laws, a great book largely contributed to by various American States! :)
