We need more of these proffesionals around the world to make competetive sport a better, fairer, and more enjoyable activity for everyone in every way! Having more proffesionals who act in the correct way would be better for the younger generation of athletes coming through, so they could learn how to act, so they don't get into bad situations too early in their careers. Older sportsmen couls also learn a thing or two, they surely can't ALL be behaving that well off of the pitch, all of the time!
Here are some examples of people that I feel could be known as 'model proffesionals', for something they have done during their sporting careers. I know they're all footballers, but I am a big fan of football fan more than any other sport. I'm sure there have been some in other sports, like cricket, but just not like Hansey Cronje!
Anyway, here they are:
Alan Shearer - Earlier this season, Alan 'Mr. Boring' Shearer felt strongly about a bad descision made by a referee, and stood up against the descision of a red card. But unfortunately for Alan, the referee ignored him and stuck with his initial descision. People were surprised to see this as the red card would have given his team (Newcastle) a slight advantage over the opposition, increasing their chances of a win and 3 points.
The day after the incident, Shearer was praised by the media and players. It was something we should see more often from players who know/believe the ref was wrong, but they shouldn't take it too far as to getting a red card themselves! There was a limit to how far he could go with his protest, and he didn't cross that line. Well done Alan Shearer, you acted like a true captain should! You deserve the 'Sir Alan' you are given on Soccer AM.
If only you were playing for England this summer...
Robbie Fowler - A few years back Robbie Fowler made a brave descision after earning his side a penalty. He went passed David Seaman, and slipped on the wet pitch, no contact. He went to the referee to tell the truth, but he wouldn't have any of it and still awarded Arsenal the penalty, which they then scored from. Fowler, like Shearer, also stayed away from that border-line, and remained on the pitch.
Fowler recieved praise for his efforts in that match, from both the media and the FA. But he later went and spoilt it all with a message on a t-shirt in Liverpool's next European match. Well done Robbie for admitting the truth, it couldn't have been easy! But why did you have to ruin it with that t-shirt?? At least you'll be there in Japan and South Korea! This was also the first of these incidents that I can recall of.
Paulo Di Canio - You may remember this from last season, at Upton Park against Everton. Mr D-I Canio bravely caught the ball instead of thumping home a brilliant volley that could've secured West Ham all-3 points. Why did he do it?? Because he saw an Everton player down on the ground injured, recieving no attention at all from any match official! It was vey brave what the Italian did, and it proved he has true character inside him. You may have also recognised it from some of his performances too. He felt that 'The Hammers' had an unfair advantage over 'The Toffees' and so he did what he thought was right.
I remeber how shocked eevryone was to see Di Canio just stand there and casualy catch the ball! I was gob-smacked!! But it showed the Italian really is a true-genious when it comes to football! Even if he did have a different refereeing incident at Sheffield Wednesday! Well done Paulo, lets hope you haven't stopped there and that you'll be able to influece Cole and Carrick and co.
Why didn't Italy pick you for the World Cup???
So as you can see, there have been a few player that have proven they can do the right thing, and they are definitley worthy of a regular place in ANY starting XI!! All youngsters and captains should take note on these elite 3, and so should all other sporting athletes!
Ps. please read my post and tell me what you think!!
Arsene Wenger should take note!
I remember a few years back when Arsenal scored their winner from a sportsmanship situation the other team had made, and neither Wenger or the team did anything to stop it! It was either Overmars or Kanu who scored??
> Thanks V.V.V.V.V., I honetsly thought I wouldn't win for this post, as no-one
> replied to it! But i'm chuffed!! Thanks SR.
Can someone reply to the topic now
> please??
why did you choose kirby 64 as your GAD?
What I want to know, is why the referees can't use a bit of common sense in these situations: in not one of them did the ref make the right decision - justice was only done in the Di Canio example because he basically committed a foul and so the ref had to stop the game.
The Shearer one is not so bad, but I couldn't believe the Fowler incident. I can't remember if the game was live, but I have definitely seen the action on TV. The ref should have listened to Fowler, then given a free-kick to the opposition, or a drop ball, whatever.
Another incident you missed, but is quite recent, and hasn't got much attention:
A reserve game match, can't remember who, might have been Watford involved. Anyway, some-one got injured, so the ref stopped play. Then had to have a drop ball, one of the players went to kick the ball back to the oppositions keeper, but slipped and sliced the ball straight into the goal. The ref had no choice but to give the goal, but the scoring teams manager made his team stand still straight from the kick off while the other team walked the ball into an empty net! His good deed was returned as his team won 2-1 in the end.
Just goes to show you though, the spirit of the game is not dead yet!
