Ah, the joy of role-playing........ No I don't mean what goes on behind closed doors at Jamie Theakston's house, I'm talking about the wonders of gaming and the fantasy roles we can step into via the medium of colourful polygons.

Turn the console on and we are instantly transported to a different place - THE THIRD PLACE.

Videogames put us in the boots of many diverse characters. Just today, for instance, I've been sneaking around a heavily guarded facility, blowing seven shades of green stuff out of reptilian scum, and scoring an overhead kick in an important Premiership fixture.

Now I got into gaming back in the golden days and silver nights of the Megadrive and Snes, but I often ponder what I'd be doing if I'd never seen Sonic 1 (because that's when I caught the bug). Well the people around me might say that I'd probably "have a life"..... in fact I play games so much that I am constantly reminded that I NEED to "get a life" - but what the hell do they know! "TALK TO THE HAND BABY COS THE FACE AIN'T LISTENING!" (Oops, sorry about that camp Ricki Lake moment). *cough*

(Adopting deeper voice): Anyway, IT'S THE REASON WHY WE PLAY GAMES RIGHT? To be able to walk in someone else's boots. To be able to GO INTO places we would never in reality get a chance to visit.

I mean, let's face it, everyday life can be real dull - whether it's school, work, or the endless regurgitated nonsense of the soap operas - and this is where games come into there own: pop the disc into the console and the TV screen becomes like a portal leading the eyes into a different and more interesting dimension.

So (for what it's worth) that's what gaming means to me: it allows me to walk in someone else's boots into worlds and places I can't go in reality.

But in the end it's all a fantasy, it's all roleplay, it's all twiddling about with joysticks in bedrooms - and so the question has to be asked: ARE GAMERS NOTHING ELSE BUT SAD "CLOUD CUCKOO LANDERS" WHO NEED TO GET A LIFE? - (Positivity to negativity in the space of a few sentences.)

And the answer is.......

You can name Link in the Zelda games. I found it surprising at first when I realised he had my name. Someone asked him for it, he said my name, and I thought "No?? You're Link!"

I hate games where you have to adopt a characters name. It should be made a videogame law that you can name your character whatever the hell you want.
