Turn the console on and we are instantly transported to a different place - THE THIRD PLACE.
Videogames put us in the boots of many diverse characters. Just today, for instance, I've been sneaking around a heavily guarded facility, blowing seven shades of green stuff out of reptilian scum, and scoring an overhead kick in an important Premiership fixture.
Now I got into gaming back in the golden days and silver nights of the Megadrive and Snes, but I often ponder what I'd be doing if I'd never seen Sonic 1 (because that's when I caught the bug). Well the people around me might say that I'd probably "have a life"..... in fact I play games so much that I am constantly reminded that I NEED to "get a life" - but what the hell do they know! "TALK TO THE HAND BABY COS THE FACE AIN'T LISTENING!" (Oops, sorry about that camp Ricki Lake moment). *cough*
(Adopting deeper voice): Anyway, IT'S THE REASON WHY WE PLAY GAMES RIGHT? To be able to walk in someone else's boots. To be able to GO INTO places we would never in reality get a chance to visit.
I mean, let's face it, everyday life can be real dull - whether it's school, work, or the endless regurgitated nonsense of the soap operas - and this is where games come into there own: pop the disc into the console and the TV screen becomes like a portal leading the eyes into a different and more interesting dimension.
So (for what it's worth) that's what gaming means to me: it allows me to walk in someone else's boots into worlds and places I can't go in reality.
But in the end it's all a fantasy, it's all roleplay, it's all twiddling about with joysticks in bedrooms - and so the question has to be asked: ARE GAMERS NOTHING ELSE BUT SAD "CLOUD CUCKOO LANDERS" WHO NEED TO GET A LIFE? - (Positivity to negativity in the space of a few sentences.)
And the answer is.......
