Having looked at SRs very reasonably priced computer products after deciding to replace my old hard disk, i decided to invest in a 40gb model for a mere £80. Having already done my research and seen the inferior model which was offered at PC World (20gb same speed and £70) I thought to my self why are many highstreet vendors so expensive. Theres the obvious answer of overhead costs such as the rental of shop space or the hiring of staff to man the check outs, but this i decided was not the answer. It is blatantly the fact that It is because all the people who know little about computers think it is the best place to go. This means that PC world and the likes have a set market who assume that the reason why the price is so high is because of quality and will accept what ever PC world deigns to give them. It is due to a lack of public awareness that companies such as these can charge whatever they want and still recieve massive amounts of revenue. The main advantage of buying onsite is clearly that you get your purchase straight away but this is becoming less a factor with the speed of online delivery now days. If more people where more computer literate then they would buy from the cheaper places and expensive places would be forced to lower prices to compete. Another very good example of this is there advertising they try to make all there computers sound really great (i know good business sense so theey can sell more) but they offer such a wide range of machines saying to your average customer "word processing eh, you'll need a 2ghz machine if you want to do that other wise it will be dated very quickly" because they have such a brosd range which they discourage people from buying the lower cost machines they price the other ones extremely expensively to make them look like considerably better. It is a case of quality is judged by price were knowledge isn't available so high street stores take advantage of them. This is less possible on the internet as competition is so much greater if some one can use the internet they can generally surf the net to find who offers the best value. This means that companies such as SR offer good value products and good service to keep our business but companies like Dixons or PC world don't care about our business much as if they lose our custom there are usually more customers willing to buy from them.

I think you had it at the beginning, pc 'shops' in your town, or places like PC World have to pay staff to walk around looking important, and someone has to drink from the new coffee machines put around the places, otherwise it would be a waste of money, also the shops have to pay rent on the building, I also think the companies they buy from are ripping them off as no-one really like PC World anymore.
Also...The staff know about Processors? they must have picked that up from some customers and with the sheer intelligence they have, realised that they might have something to do with the shop.
I'm pretty sure they just read from the huge boards infront of the pc when selling them.
Also I love internet shopping, if it's over a certint price you don't pay anything on postage :D even when you don't, it's near half price of anything in a shop, and you can get next day delivery at some places.
I tlk to some people and they say they'd rather pay for it now, but that's just silly, when you see how many things are avliable and at different prices.
The price you mentioned for your hdd was pretty good, not that i've looked around for sometime, quite happy that I got a 20Gb for £40 the other day, works like a charm, still need a monitor though, i'm told that can help when using a pc.
