All of a sudden we are awash with "no rules" sports games? Why? God only knows, attempting originality I presume but suddenly racing games like Mario Kart aren't the only game where you will do anything in order to insure victory. Despite the sudden influx of titles, I’m not disappointed in fact I find these titles interesting, here's a few of them:

Game: Outlaw Golf
Platform: Gamecube/X-box
Developer: Simon and Schuster Interactive

A golf game with a difference! Ever played a golf game and made a mistake, watching the ball trickle a few yards from your tee. Makes you want to scream, but instead how about you smash in your Poor Caddy with the club of your choice. Ever wanted to play golf against a death row inmate called Killer Miller???? Well now you can, Outlaw Golf is an X-box title, with plans to port to Gamecube (announced at the Milia Game show), it features, strippers, female golfers with short skirts (and yes you can move the camera) and the opportunity to smash car windows... Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Game: SEGA SMASH SOCCER
Platform: Gamecube
Developer: visual concepts

I so wanted Mario football but instead I get this... ah well close enough. Here it is, you have a goal, you have a ball, you cannot pick it up. And that's it let the chaos commence! Sega Soccer Slam incorperates these main buttons: Shoot/hit, steal, protect, turbo and power up, in every sense the Mario football I was hoping for except without Mario. It is a game exclusive (for now) on the Nintendo Gamecube, it doesn't push the Gamecube's graphical power but it is simply oozing with Gameplay and is definatly one to watch.

Game: NBA Street
Platform: PS2/X-box/Gamecube
Developer: EA Sports

It's a little surprising for a company, famed for making serious sport games like FIFA, to dabble in the fine art of "no rules"! NBA Street is exactly that, NBA in the street, and street rules aren't the same as normal rules. Who cares if he traveled, ahhhhh did he kick you in the knackers ahh well you'll live! That's right NBA street is basketball at its roughest, 3 on 3 no rules action as you attempt to get the ball through the hoop taking out your opponents as you go. NBA street, with its create a player mode and many secrets is sure to impress on the X-box and Gamecube as it did on the PS2.

Game: NHL Hitz 20-02
Platform: Gamecube/PS2/X-box
Developer: Midway/black box games

Here we have ice hockey, with guess what? NO RULES (seeing a trend). Made a violent tackle on the player? Enter beat-em-up mode, a side on view appears and a fight breaks out between you and your opponent where frankly you beat the crap out of them. The games pick up and play attitude is brilliant, gorgeous graphics and amazing sound adds to the atmosphere. So NHL teams are present along with the ability to create your own. Violent Ice Hockey at its very best.

Game: Speedball 2
Platform: GBA
Developer: Crawfish

Not current days sport this, speedball is set in the future and its object is simple, get the ball into your opponent’s goal. And guess what? There are no rules! Slam your opponents onto the ground and into barriers; use one of several power ups, basically anything to win. Speedball was designed by the famous bitmap brothers and was a huge hit, lets hope crawfish repeat this.

So there we have it a list of sports games turned on its side, and they are all quite frankly a very tempting bunch of games. If we want proper Football or Golf then go out and play it, if you want to smack peoples face in and smash car windows without getting hurt or in trouble whilst playing it, the best bet is to get one of these computer games. It is nice to see all platforms get to enjoy these types of games, unlike other classic titles, which stick to a singular platform like Jet Set Radio Future and Resident Evil. I can tell you now I will be getting at least one of those “no rule” games for my Gamecube. Expect Cricket, baseball and
