One of the first truly next generation games was set to be 2006 Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, that is thanks to the brilliant graphics and the immaculate gameplay. At first, because the playstation 3 was still in the making, this game was only for the xbox 360. However, now that we are in the year 2007, and the playstation is out, ubisoft has delivered the first GRAW game for it. The sequel that was delivered on the xbox 360 earlier this year was, GRAW2. This is basically like starting a book in the middle. GRAW games are based on shooting things rather than the story.

This game puts you into the US Army Captain Scott Mitchell wearing steel-toed combat boots of the 5th special forces group which turns into a battle going south into the border of Mexico. To enjoy GRAW2, you needn’t have played the first game to get into this 1.

A civil war in Mexico has started out between mutinous army units. In this new game, the US and elected civilian government have been drawn into conflict. The fighting in this game, threatens the US to go along with the threat of nuclear weapons, and because of that, it gives you more superiors to scream into the radio to try and kill the rebels.

The intense infantry combat which was featured in the original GRAW is set to follow. There are team missions aswell as solo missions and you have to achieve a set of objectives. In these objectives you will go from rescuing a Mexican journalist who has clues about the insurgency, to neutralizing enemy encampments, and loads more. This game is great at setting the scene of the 2nd world war and this is where all of the action takes place and unfolds. This includes much more turmoil than in the first game issued. Visually, the graphics are completely stunning, even more so that they r better than the first. And this is all thanks to the lighting and effects. As you fly over in the black hawk helicopter, you will see the cityscapes which consist of hundreds of buildings. Also you can take in fabulous views of the setting sun, gaze at enormous pillars of smoke which are rising from the fires in Mexico City. But the PS3 is a bit more downgraded from the xbox 360 as the colours are duller and the frame rate struggles at times.

GRAW2 consists of on foot and in vehicle action sequences. And a lot of the time you will be on foot, searching for cover to help yourself from the Mexican army rebels and the foreign mercenaries. You can hug a lot of forms of cover, and once your there, you can swing out or up to distract the enemy before dropping back to cover. This is the system that makes GRAW2 feel authentic rather than in other shooters, you just stand in the open. Plus, it isn’t just yourself you have to worry about, when the squad system lets you create and command a small infantry squad.

The way in which you control the team mates, drones or vehicles is much easier now, thanks to the communications systems. You can be in two places at once aswell, that works by getting a full screen video from any friendly asset on the battlefield. Talk to your men, tell them where to move to cover, use their video cameras, and locate things. In this game, Sixaxis motion controls a limited fashion, but with the PS3 controls, is while there are multiple control configurations to choose from, none of them let you use the R2 trigger.

GRAW2 eliminates the most frustrating gameplay that appeared kin the first game, one included is the rooftop sniper hunts. They’ve been replaced with riveting set-piece battles, they include a black hawk down scenario. In GRAW2, the battles are superb, as the vehicles are exploding, helicopters charging above you, everything is going crazy.

You still need to do a lot of heavy lifting in this game, especially when it comes to combat. Although there is a nice new feature, which is that is does a great job of calling out enemy locations. For example: the team mates will shout out if there are 2 bad boys shooting at you. And the rest of the game is also fantastic. Your immediate superior, General Keating, is as dictating as ever! Always telling you what to do, and he behaves like he can do anything, and simply just shouts louder. In the middle of a big firefight, the US president gives you a pep talk and immediately GRAW2 feels like over-the-top TV!

There is a downside to this campaign, and its because it is very short, you can get through it in 4-5 hours which therefore it is over before you realise! There is a huge amount of multiplayer goodness in GRAW2, much more than the original. Theres something in multipleyer mode for everyone, from 6 mission co-op campaign, which takes place in Panama, to an incredibly open-ended competitive suite. There are many updates for the PS3 which are downloadable.

Theres is a much stronger gamplay in this game, aswell as new maps and new weapons. For example: the graphics in single player mode now match the multiplayer mode, and that didn’t happen in the original. 16 player games can now feel roomy because the new levels are fairly big and the design is inspired. The maps are in several variations, and at different ti9me of the day, they reflect on the lighting conditions. And that is a good touch because it shows off the cool effects.

All the variable levels can be adjusted, from the amount of respawns, the weapon restrictions, the objectives etc. Although, when playing in multiplayer mode, there can be a lot of silliness. In the new helicopter hunt mode, you and your team mates are constantly shooting down gunship and helicopters out of the sky with rocket launchers. This task is a little bit hard and that’s because of the speed and manoeuvrability of helicopters.

In the 6 mission co-op campaign, its a lot of fun as you romp through separate storylines along with 15 players or less. Previously, in the original GRAW game, you only had to worry about killing all the baddies as fast as you could, but now, with the dynamic objectives, the team has got to coordinate and accomplish secondary goals. During these goals, you are supposed to blow up two radio towers simultaneously, because if you destroyed them separately it would risk the appearance of enemy reinforcements.

GRAW2 is an easy purchase for multiplayer fans. And the good side is that if you don’t like playing online, this is an iffier proposition. Single player mode is a fun game! Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 makes a compelling case for a game to play if you are a big fan of modern combat!
