Gaming is like a box of chocolates.... "you never quite know what you're gonna get".........

Yeah I know, sorry about the Forest Gump bull, but it seems to me that it's true.

When you finally get your mits on a new game, peel off the wrapping, open the box and glance at the manual, you never quite know if you'll get a CHEWY CARAMEL (good) or a COFFEE CREAM (not good).

And then comes the moment of truth: you slot the CD/cartridge into the machine and turn it on. A mixture of excitment and concern ripples through your mind: will it be as good as the reviews claimed it would be? WILL IT BE TASTY? WILL IT BE CHEWY? WILL IT BE A COFFEE CREAM? OH NO! Well, there's only one way to find out: pick up the controller and start to play.

I don't know about you, but I tend to know if I'm going like a game almost immediately after playing it for a couple of minutes. I think it's all to do with the general look and vibe of the graphics. I'll always stick with a game for several hours even if I initially don't really like it, but sometimes I just know deep down that I've made the wrong choice, and that the inevitable refund is on the cards.

I think this MINDSET OF EXCITMENT & CONCERN has influenced my new purchase game day ritual, because every time I buy a new game I cannot play it straight away - I have to leave it in its box for about an hour or so. I just sit there like a prisoner reading the manual hoping that all will be well when I eventually slip it in the console.

Does anyone else share with me this SCARED OF PLAYING A NEW GAME IN CASE IT'S A BIG FAT LETDOWN phobia?

I suspect most gamers just slam their new purchase straight in and just get on with checking it out. BUT FOR SOME REASON I JUST CAN'T DO THAT. Maybe I'm prone to making the wrong decisions when it comes to buying a new game: my fear attracts me to what I fear. Or maybe I've just been let down too many times by games I thought would be better than they actually were.

Hmmm, a pirate eh? I bought 12 copied Dreamcast games once... At first I thought "yes!" - later I felt dirty.
