Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the guys who started it all. The Simpsons was out there doing its thing, making us laugh and making a lot of DO'H from merchendise. So it was obvious that each network would have a go at emulating the success of Matt Groaning's creation. MTV had Beavis and Butthead and Comedy Central they had the foul mouthed Soith Park.

I am a fan of the show and have followed it from day one. I have seen starvin Marvin, said howdy ho to Mr Hanky and heard the most foul mouthed 8 year olds the world has ever seen. From the start the show came with a may offend people warning, and offend people it certainly did. Canada, Sudam Husane, and Jews to name a few were targeted. When it started it was ok, just a bit of fun. But as the show continues you find yourself stopping your laughter and thinking 'should I be laughing at this?

South Park Bigger Longer And Uncut, was the title for the South Park movie that did do quite well. Although the content of the film shouldnt be funny, it had a lot of people rolling around it stiches. It even was a record breaker, If you look up the movie section in your Guiness book of world records it will be there. Why? It contains the most swear words in a movie ever. Which is something the creators are very happy with.

For the last 4-5 years (yes it has been around that long) I have been watching and enjoying the show. Yes its not everyones cup of tea, but I find it impossible not to laugh at some of Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny's anticts. I own many videos and have a few DVD's which I often watch on my own or with friends.

But it was during last seasen that I started to see the evil behind South Park. Until then the worst the show did was kill a character every single episode (except on one christmas special). But during the last series a new character was introduced, Timmy. Yes he is funny, and brings new possibilities to the show. But the show is really quite cruel to the disabled population of our planet.
At first I found the Timmy jokes funny, I still do. But at the same time I feel bad about it. A new series has started on Sky One, in the other nights episode a new disabled boy was featured (he isnt a new character, he was just there for one episode) his name is Jimmy. Him and Timmy have a dispute and end up fighting. The fight goes on to be one of the most harsh things to come out of South Park. I wont go into detail but its just so amazing that the show continues when it resorts to episodes like this.

What do the creators say about people being hurt or offended by the content if the show? They say and I quote 'We dont give a f***' They dont care who they hurt aslong as they get paid. Its kind of shocking, these people are rich from the show and its merchendise. They have also starred in some movies including the quite amusing Basketball. But even after we have given them so much of our money, they still dont care about anyone except them. Thats showbiz for you.

If a real life show contained half the things South Park does, then that show would have been cancled a long time ago. You can get away with so much more in animation that in real life. Which is obvious, as real life is real it looks, sounds and feels real. But animation is all pretty colours and voice acting.

Dont get me wrong, im not turning my back on the show. Im not going to stop watching and enjoying the show. Because it is good it is entertaining. Im just saying that it could be enteraining without resulting to some of the things it does. You never see these kind of things in the Simpsons, and look how succesful that has become. So I will continue to watch, but I only hope that they clean up the act just a bit as they have taken things too far.

What are your opinions?

Yeah, I know people like him in real life, except without the crippling disability and jokes, and I hate them, heh

Is South Park really descriminatory though?

dis·crim·i·na·tion n.
Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit.

The thing with South Park is that it lays into everyone in equal measure, so it isn't making any discrimination between races, classes or cultures - and I think that's why it gets away with so much.

The black kid called 'Token'; 'fatass' Cartman; Kyle 'the Jew'; Big Gay Al; Timmy. No-one is safe. Ultimately, it's only highlighting the issues within much of Western culture, and people would sooner criticise the programme than look at the deeper social issues - it's easier that way. After all, society isn't in its current state because of programmes like South Park; these programmes exist because of the way society is today.

As I said in another thread a short time ago, I am able to separate the comedy element from this type of humour from the social issues, and enjoy it purely as humour.

There is, in my book, a great difference between humour for the sake of humour, and humour with malicious intent. Yet it seems many people are unable to separate these. Thus, while I may laugh out loud at jokes about all groups and types of people, that doesn't mean I look on them differently in my everyday life. On this basis, I always find South Park funny, and never, ever offensive.

Yeah, sometimes South Park goes "over" the line. But, let's face it, isn't that what it's intended to do in the first place? Highlighting problems within our society others wouldn't dare touch. For instance, the scenario the chap mentioned before in an earlier post "It's okay for this type of discrimination, but not this type".

The hypocritical nature of it all.

If they can rip the out of fat people, jewish people, poor people, even starving africans then how comes suddenly it is out of order to start on disabled people.
I saw the episode and thought it was hilarious. I did think it was a little harsh but everything is harsh in south park.
The makers knew that timmy would cause controversy and i think they have proved something by showing that people think its ok for discrimination in certain areas but not in others. The Jimmy versus Timmy fight was no worse than when cartman tells kyle he should shut his mouth 'you jew'. I cant believce the fight is even causing an issue when a perverted scout master earlier on in the show took pictures of all the scouts naked. Do you not think that is a little too far?
