Ps2- I don't really want one as the PS was so crap, but there are certain games (i.e. GTA, Pro Evo 2, and the obvious other choices) which show the Playstation has come along, since its highly over rated predecessor. I must say I have been fairly impressed by the PS2, and it having DVD playback was a big advantage over the GC. Also being a scabby git I can borrow games of people as there are so many people who have them. The main disadvantage is that I love shoot'em ups, especially multiplayer. And the bloomin PS2 is perhaps the biggest loner console since the PS1. Haven't Sony figured: "you put two controller slots in a console, and nobody makes multiplayer games". This must be the worst error of judgement since Hitler was put into power. Just put 4 sockets in the PS3 and I might buy it, because no good shoot'em up developers will make any good games if you persist in this most ridiculous of design flaws. Anyway that’s enough ranting. Generally if felt this was a pretty good console with one huge flaw and no real quality shoot’em ups, which can be played with 4 players.
GC- Originally, it was my intention to buy a Gamecube, as the n64 had been the best of the last generation consoles by a mile. However to my shock and horror Rare was sold. V.disappointing. I had been banking on the fact that there hadn't been huge amounts of quality in the first day releases, but this would be remedied with later releases such as Zelda from Nintendo, or some quality releases from Rare. This is a fun multiplayer console and I don't believe it is really that "childish" as some of its critics say. However I don't feel it really has enough variety at the moment, as most of the games seem to be platformers or puzzle games. Where are Mario Kart and Goldeneye the games which made the N64, unique and great? In the GC Nintendo seems to have lost something, its lost some of its multiplayer feel through the absence of these games, and the fall of smash brothers. What have they done to it? You do not actually believe how much I loved this game, I have played Smash Brothers on the N64 till my fingers bled (not really) but it was so addictive. Now it is little more than a dodgy pokemon fest, with flashing lights, odd level design and freaky pokemon related moving areas, this has annoyed me greatly. The beauty of the game was the simplicity and they have killed it! Although fun, it lacks DVD playback and I would keep on comparing it to my beloved N64.
X-Box- In all honesty I hadn't really thought about the X-box, I thought "first time console" probably won't measure up too well against the others. But none the less I thought I’d have a look at it. And to my surprise, I was actually pretty impressed. It had a wide range of shoot'em ups to chose from, which were actually playable in multiplayer! Although many of these titles such as "Frontline, Timesplitters 2, Turok" are available on other consoles it is the X-box which has the widest range of them and allows you to get the most out of them in multiplayer. Shoot'em ups do seem to be its area of main expertise with games such as 'Halo', 'Hitman', 'Splinter Cell', 'Unreal Tournament', 'Jedi knight 2' and 'Nightfire', helping to prove the X-box the indisputable king of console shooters. Having sung its praises, it must be admitted that it is thin on the ground in some other areas of games. It has a few platformers, and some decent fighting games, and the racing games are alright, and this is when Microsoft's big trump card is likely to be played. The buying up of Rare was an ingenious move which could help put Microsoft to the forefront of the console race, Rare as well as being masters of the shoot'em up made some of the best platformers on the N64 in Banjo Kazooie and DK, With titles such as these promised in the future, and a Diddy Kong racing game said to be in the pipe line, X box should be well on the way to filling in some of its deficiencies. Again DVD playback is another major advantage (I know you have to buy the remote!) but it is the power and multiplayer capacity of this console which draws me to it.
I haven't bought it yet and it is quite possible, and being the fickle individual that I am I could well change my mind, it looks to me that X-box is the console which could dominated the console war in the future, as it has a lot going for it at the moment and its future looks bright. Well done Microsoft!
Giving four games away is majestic...
I hated the 'new age consoles, (32bit +), when they started to not sell them with games.
This is brilliant, I'm off to buy one as soon as I get payed.....
Personally, I have been pretty dissapointed with the GameCube. Mario sunshine was (my) most dissapointing game of the year. And there hasnt relly been anything special on it at all. Starfox was supposed to be amazing too. Had been in proudction for bloody years, and as Rare's last game for a Ninty console you would expect it to be amazing. But the reviews have been very average.
But the future does look much much better. Metroid Prime (FPS - out in march i think) is one of the games of the year. Its got similar reviews to Halo and some say its better. And then of course, the new Zelda game scored almost perfect marks in Famitsu.
But there again, £199 with 5 games (xbox from toys'r'us) is just too good a offer.
PS2 is my most played console by far though. Nothin touches Pro evo 2 and VIce City. And, although a lot of people reckon the getaway is average, i loved it.

I can be convinced otherwise. But i feel the X box gives me this as a fan of shooters. I have lost touch a bit with Nintendo, any future reasons that any of you magazine readers can tell me that might give another console an advantage, or any problems you found with the X box, which i have found pretty reliable when using a firends.
