Why I remember the good ol' days of the late 80's and early 90's when gaming was somethign really special, something incredible and different with each new game that arrived... It was all a lot different to gaming today. It was all so-much-better...!

Okay, so things may seem to be a hell-of-a-lot better today than they were 10 years ago. At least in the appearence of games today anyway. And the power of each console along with the vastly-improved technology since the days when Nintendo were ontop and PC Gaming was just another crazy idea that people thought would never take-off. Graphics in games today - like Resident Evil Zero for example - may be looking ever-more 'photo-realistic' as time-goes-on, but what we musn't forget is that good looks aren't everything, and that you need to consider what is really inside of these games first before deciding on it - or not.
Gameplay is a huge factor in making any modern game a success, and good gameplay is something that has kept the Super Mario series going-strong throughout these times when the PS2 is on-top and the SONY fan-boys look-down on Nintendo as a whole.

Back in the day, Nintendo and SEGA were scrapping it out for 1st Place, introducing us to Sonic and Mario for the very-first times, characters who would soon go-on to become not only company mascots, but more importantly "legends" of the gaming world who are still highly-regarded and well-known amongst the gaming public today, nearly 20-whole-years later. Compared with the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and even Rachet and Clank, the speedy, blue hedgehog and beefy Italian-American plumber still come out on-top.

Today, Nintendo and SEGA are seen as "old" and perhaps even "past their expirey dates" when compared with the likes of Microsoft, and SONY, who are in-control of the current 'console war' today. The PS2 and X-Box may be the 'consoles of choice' to the average gamer instead of the Nintendo GameCube, but what has Bill Gates given us that made gaming what it is today? And has SONY's head-honcho (whoever he may be!) given us anythign revolutionary that could change the future of gaming in the long-run?

I believe that answer is no. They may have spent millions in the production of their latets consoles and on research and advertisement also, but what have the given us back in return? All they seem to have done is taken gaming and used it as a financial business to nick all our money that could be spent on more important things; like health, and education! Nintendo and SEGA however, are much different...

For a start, Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuki Naka have given us entirely original characters and games (which have gone-on to spawn entire series'), unlike the other 2 companys of today who have payed other people (like Squaresoft with Final Fantasy) to do all the work for them, and give them what they need to vastly decrease the numbers in our bank accounts.
So while Miyamoto may be bringing us epic adventures like The Legend of Zelda and Metroid Prime, along with the usual Super Mario game, along with StarFox and Donkey Kong, SONY are paying someone else to come up with he goods for them, giving us cheap immitations of the things Nintendo have slaved-over for hours.
But despite how bad they may be, they still sell well. And you can look at almost all of the latest games published by Electronics Arts on all formats for proof of this!
Yu Suzuki has given us the incredible experience that is the Shenmue series, along with Yuki Naka's Sonic and co., but Bill Gates would rather give us a cheap, dull, and short-lived Flight Simulator on an annual basis, instead of giving us something that we'd want, something gaming actually needs.

Nintendo and SEGA alone have been giving gaming what it has needed in order to reach all-areas of the world as the huge success that it has become over the years since the simplified days of Pong and Space Invaders. Without innovative companies like these 2 who have cared, I belive that gaming wouldn't be the same. There'd be no Mario, no Sonic, and a whole lot of daft-looking animals and TV liscenses ripped-off and crammed onto CD's making Space Invaders look even-better by the minute as each new waste-of-space is released.

People talk about Nintendo and SEGA being bad for gaming today, in an "un-cool" kind of sense. The truth is that gaming wouldn't be the same without them, and that it will not be able to survive once the likes of Rareware and Capcom have left the scene. SONY and Microsoft may be huge, well-known names with intense world-wide reputations, but they're harming gaming as we know right infront of our very eyes.

They may be popular and "cool", but what have they really done....

a simple industry is it but its a industry which people enjoy playing or working for, Mainly thats a reason why its so big, But however its a good post. And pb pointed out that GTA was 'nicked' well it was more renewed rather, just like Music there are thousands of old songs made by classic like Bob dylan, Elvis and Jackie wilson the list just goes on and songs are renewed to the present time.

Also Making ideas for games isn't that easy is it all the best and classic ideas were made back when minds were acutally alive :p

Who does? I'll kill 'em! ;-)

But I feel this is a bit of a simple view of the industry. Sony themselves have pushed developers to come up with new ideas such as Vice City (although a friend of mine pointed out the other day that this was an idea nicked from a spectrum game, I kid you not!). Microsoft may be more to blame for nicking ideas, but then they've brought PC gaming to the console.

Sony have helped developers with, you guessed it, funding. Namco and others may not need this as much as smaller developers but it all helps, especially where profits are important.
