With every week that another shot from either Ruud van Nistelrooy or Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hits the back of a Premiership net, so the absence of Holland from the World Cup this year seems more unbelievable. It’s amazing when you think that the Republic of Ireland qualified for Japan and Korea this summer at the expense of the Dutch masters.

Of course, World Cups are often deprived of great players. George Best for example never once played in a World Cup and had no chance to show the whole World his natural talent and ability.
It’s just that the absence of players like van Nistelrooy and Hasselbaink is particularly pitiful for us because of their performances week-in-week-out in the English game. Presumably, the Italians are saying the same type of thing about the absence of the Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko.
After the Frenchman, Thierry Henry, who thankfully is going to the World Cup in the summer, van Nistelrooy and Hasselbaink are the most prolific goalscorers in English football, yet it is some of the players who are behind them in the goalscoring charts such as Michael Owen and maybe Robbie Fowler who are going to the World Cup instead.

It is fair, however, to assume the likes of van Nistelrooy, Hasselbaink, Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars, Patrick Kluivert and Edwin van der Sar, perhaps the best players in world football today will be busting a gut in Amsterdam tomorrow night against England, to show the world what they will be missing this summer. The fact that it is by no means certain that both van Nistelrooy and Hasselbaink will be selected to play against England tomorrow shows us the strength of the Dutch team. Apart from anything else, there could be some problems about fielding, in the same team, two players who like to score goals. That similarity apart, they are two different players.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has got better and better as the season has progressed, and the £19m paid for him by Manchester United looks like an absolute bargain. He has a great touch, he’s big, strong, confident, reasonably quick and an excellent finisher. He can go round a keeper, slot one past him or dink one over him, score acrobatic goals and score from a distance. In fact, he’s got it all.
But, whereas most of his goals come from inside the penalty area like a real ‘fox in the box’, the vast majority of Hasselbaink’s goals come from outside the box, which is rather unusual for someone so prolific. Most ‘blasters’ of the ball do not tend to score many goals, although a label to Hasselbaink as simply being a ‘blaster’ would be totally out-of-order. He is sometimes accused of being ‘greedy’ and ‘selfish’, but if you can hit the ball like he can, you should be encouraged to hit it from any range.
He can take beautiful free-kicks as he showed against Tottenham in the first leg of the semi-final of the Worthington Cup, and I feel he is a better striker of the ball than David Beckham by a long shot. (Sorry, couldn’t resist the little pun there!!!)
Many goalscorers are labelled as being ‘selfish’. But, show me a Striker who passes when he has a good reason to score and I will show you someone who does not score many goals at all!

I definitely feel Sven Goran Eriksson should take tomorrow nights friendly seriously and put out his best eleven possible, not-withstanding any injuries. The England defence needs a hard test in practice for Japan and Korea in the summer, and who better to give it to them than the likes of van Nistelrooy, Hasselbaink, Kluivert, Overmars, and Davids.

All that is left to say is: ‘Come on England!!!’

Anyway, thanks for taking time to read my discussion, I look forward to reading your replies.

Why yes Ash1ey, I do enjoy the occasional game of Eidos' Championship Manager, season 2001/02. But i'm not that addicted like I used to be last season. You're right, I probably did get the phrase from there, but that's what those types of players do!

But hey, Holland aren't going there, so their team should be closer to England. So United can go and negotiate with Hofland, and Arsenal can chase Van Bommel when Vieira's gone!

Don't forget clarence Seedorf, Kevin Hofland, Van Bommel all top notch players and players like rafael van der Vaart who is having an amazing season at Ajax and is only 17. PSV and Ajax must be 2 of the best clubs in the world at producing young players.

After Thierry henry?

Hasselbaink is a much more prolific goal scorer 2 seasons heading over 30. Henry has been unreliable to say the least upto the beginning of this season.

I think its a shame the dutch aren't going they deserved to win euro 2000 but france fluked it. I would have had them down as one of the favourites to win it. After Argentina and England (wishful thinking,i know)

Good post and good topic! This is something i've been wondering myself, and I was previously thinking Holland had the potential to win the World Cup itself! But now they haven't even qualified, it's just very dissapointing.
I was also hoping to see the likes of Davids, Kluivert, van Nistelrooy and Hasselbaink light up the stage, but now, it seems like there's gunna be a huge chunk missing from Japan and South Korea this summer, called Holland!

Nice Post.

World cup definitly wont be the same without the Dutch.

Allways a joy to watch as they play such attractive attacking football.

But most Premiership managers should be happy though! They'll get their dutch players back in the new season nice and fresh! Remember after the last world cup load of players were suffering from burnout.
