I mean, how unoriginal can you get? With a few exceptions, every single action adventure game available is really, really dull. It seems to be the universal genre, especially for shoddy ports. "We have just aquired the rights to one of the best films in recent history, LOTR. Let's make a shoddy Action Adventure game!". Urgh...
I myself own precisely none of such titles. Why? Because they're all the same. I've never played a single action adventure game that was either original or that I liked, and that includes Tomb Raider. All you do is run around in a third person view, solving "puzzles" while shooting things that look vaguely dangerous, often for no apparent reason. Now, in premise it sounds OK-ish, but in practise the gameplay is often dull and samey. The AA genre offers little scope for veriety, like so many others.
Now, I'm not critisising third person games in general, because they're not all like that. I absolutely love Silent Hill 2, GTA3, and etc... Even games like Fur Fighters which come very close to AA I really like, partly because of the good old fashioned platformy bits in, the puzzles which are quite difficult at times and the ace control systems.
So why is it then that almost every film conversion you EVER see is an action adventure? How many film conversions have there been? How many can you think of that haven't been action adventures? Off the top of my head I can think of 2, possibly 3. Ptiful. Surely developers must realise people hate these games? It seems to me like they have a generic film->game engine and they just replace the models.
Here's my view: Films are filmed third person. You hardly ever see a film "through the eyes of the protagonist". You are always an observer, as you are in many action adventures. Secondly, the only films that seem to be worthy of conversion are action flicks. Obviously there are exceptions, but just about all of them are. Thirdly, action adventures are the easiest to complete. They often require minimal effort and (most importantly) thought to make. All you do is slap in a lead, bolster a flimsy plot (often to go with the film), make a few levels with "keys" and flog it to the guillible public. Simple. Of course, it doesn't need to be good because it will probably ride on the success of the film. Even if it isn't it doesn't matter, because it cost you less than the price of a curry to make.
Now, you seem like I'm just targetting films here. Well, I am, but I might as well expand on this to keep Gaz happy.
Take another hate of mine: Tomb Raider. What the hell ever made these games a success? (Breasts). Well, OK, but that can't be all of it, but it must be! Puzzles are standard push-button affair, the fighting is... well, point and shoot (steady...) There is absolutely nothing in the game that makes it stand out (now whether there's something on the lead that stands out is a different matter). I don't know, maybe I'm just going crazy but I SWEAR if I see another license wasted on an action adventure I will probably hurt someone.
Bloody southern school people, why can't they have holidays with the rest of us? Bah humbug.
The demo for WipEout Fusion is crap, but I've rented the game and it's class. FAAAAAAR too addictive!
One coursework...
Two courseworks...
Three courseworks...
All "put off" until tomorrow. But of course I have WipEout Fusion for tomorrow too. And then I'm off to a mate's for the night, come back late Thursday. Then Friday morning I'm off to Essex to meet Luke, Phil, Jess and the rest of the SW Krew until Sunday, and I'm going to leach *so* much of Luke's bandwidth NTL won't know what's hit them, muahaha...
Anyway, enough of me and my insomnia-induced ramblings, talk about the topic. What was it about again? Who wrote it anyway, it's rubbish. I'm sure they can do better. Just wait and see my chums, Ortega knows what's in store, should be interesting.
Anyway, I'm knackered gotta get sleep.
I played both the wipeout fusion and Rez Demo's. Didnt make me wanna go out anf buy them though. If I ever feel the urge I'll just play the demo again.
I keep life simple. Football and games. Religion..afterlife...all that stuff is just guesswork. No solid proof for any of it. Anyways I'm off.
Damnit, the PS2 has far too many good games. I'm raised my standrads to "9/10 or above" and I STILL can't afford all the games I want!
Hmm. I need to win GAD. Bleh, can't be bothered. I can barely be bothered to post here any more. I make a serious post regarding the fundamentals of belief and religion in the life forum and all you care about is that bloody football threads! Neanderthals, the lot of you.
I cant even play any games right now. All i've got on my PC is championship manager and i'm starting to show signd of getting bored of it...better leave it for a while. Damn PS2 is downstairs, and i really cant be bothered to go downstairs at this time of the night. HAve to move slow as well, or Mum/Dad will hear. Its just too much of a risk...damn hungry though.
Gamecube cant come any sooner...Still MGS2 and State of Emergency between now and then though.
Hmm, I've still got that. I wonder if it will work with my PS2. Probably not. I don't think my NegCon will either, damnit.
Hmm, I suddenly have an overwhelming urge to play WipEout 2097 again. I remember flying the Pirahna ship on top class with the NegCon could out run missiles! It was also possible to take a massive shortcut through the middle of the track by holding down and flying, it was that fast!
And the animals cheat! FLYING PIGS!! Ah that rules. Oooh, and the french track too from the demo. I ruled at that. I think my favourite team was Auricom. I'm disappointed at their ships in WipEout Fusion though, although my Eg-R ship kicks rump.
Sorry, I'm rambling...
I've heard nothing of Die Hard 3, but I'm wetting myself with anticipation already. Did you play DH on the PSone? Fantastic game, especially the cab chase one. Cool explosions too.
Action adventures can be dull, not all of them mind there are a few that stand out but for the majority yes, there plain boring in my opinion.
For instance I borrowed a friends Tomb Raider 4 just before Christmas because I had never played any Tomb Raider game properly myself I had only ever had a quick go or watched someone else play and I must say I grew bored of it very, very quickly. Not much of an action game is it, few and far between enemies and lots of jumping about doing nothing in particular.
Rubbish
As for film licenses well admitedly it's hard for a game to live up to the brilliance of the film (I think only Goldeneye on the N64 was succesful but that was a FPS), some companies just use the license to sell the game wheras some companies try to make use of the license and produce something good but as I said it's never going to live up to the film so nothing major should be expected really.
Milking a license also annoys me, gah.
Some action games are great only not Tomb Raider.
