is it just me or are the censors missing the point somewhat? the bbfc and elspa are the groups who decide what gets censored or removed in games and what ratings they receive but you can bet your life that not one person who works as a censor is under the age of 50 or has even so much as played a game properly in their life,so how are these people supposed to know what people will enjoy in games?
basically what im tryin to say is that the censorship organisation should get the younger persons point of view. all the people who complain about violence and other such things tend to be old people who never grew up with games the way we did and also they are not desensitised to the violence in the same way as we are. i mean when was the last time your granny tried to give you advice on what to in gta3, "gun the scallywag down," it just wont happen (although it would be quite funny).
censors should realise we are not simpletons (well, most of us) and we're not that likely to run into the streets and try to incite a riot armed with a pointy stick and some witty one-liners just because we have seen and heard things like it in games. there are far worse images that we can be exposed to in the news and in movies. their attempts to dumb down the violence in gta3 didnt work properly neway, the "more gore" code for the game appeared in every games magasine and website possible. if anthing there should be more concern for the sort of material that kids have access to on the internet.
although having said all that, it was a good move to have scenes removed from games such as twisted metal:black and mgs2 due to the september 11th incident. in tm:b the plane in the junkyard level has alreadybeen destroyed as it would have been in poor taste to allow people to shoot down a jumbo jet for it to crash into a multistory building (although it can still be done in the demo that was released before sept 11)
i can't see what makes us different from the yanks and it's so different when it comes to *ahem* films.
the germans see everything but we just see faces straining, whats up with that?
While I agree it would be nice to do without, that's simply not practical or realistic.
Shame really. It would be much better to ban stupid people from leaving the house. But equally impractical.
And yes Keef, I agree with most of the issues raised. The bbfc president is about 60! My views on censorship are in the DVD forum, entitled 'Should I be told what I can watch?' - i'll get told off if i post it all here :D
