Arcade games.
I have moments where I feel like I want to play games, but I’m not sure I really want to get in to all that strategy or gear myself up for another stealthy battle plan, avoiding guards or zombies and their ilk. At times I just want to play, just for fun and without much in the way of cerebral exertion.
Arcade games fulfil this need fantastically, and sometimes I love nothing better than to just switch on a console and go for it, I can’t help it. Now, I know all those long, drawn out games are in vogue these days, and stealth is the way to go for all the fashionable young games characters, but there are times when I just want to let rip in a shiny sports car across an open road or blast a bunch of bad guys with a large cannon.
My love of arcade games probably stems from that instant satisfaction you got when beating you mate at Atari Tanks on the VCS, it still holds today (oh for a 3D internet version of that simple game!) The great feeling you got from just slotting in a cartridge and being able to play something without reading a complicated instruction manual was, and still is, great. To not have to sit through endless hours of FMV or a long and twisting storyline where you only get to play every half hour. This is a game, man, not a film!
Ok, so sometimes I do like a bit of thinking and I admit that strategy games have a place in my life, but the thrill of an arcade shoot-out or a nice sideways scrolling blast just makes me smile.
The excellent thing about Arcade games is that once you finish them, their very nature means that you can revisit them again and again, none of this ‘I’ve seen this story too many times’ Not only that, but you can constantly improve a score and often you get nice little bonuses or find hidden secrets. Now that’s value for money!
A world without arcade games would be a much less interesting place, so I say congratulations to all those companies who made all the classic games, Capcom, Sega, Acclaim. All those days of Gauntlet, Rastan, Contra, Outrun and many others are fondly remembered, but there are plenty of current arcade games just waiting for a quick game, Burnout, Crazy Taxi and many more. Arcade games rule!
I might have another search for a cheap Atari VCS system soon...
Once again, excellent.
Sometimes you really do need a break from all these new games... I'm so glad I re-bought a Megadrive. :0)
