Recently I have been thinking, what makes the perfect games such as Mario64 and Zelda: Ocarina of time? Simple, it is the pure fact that you feel as though you have total and utter control, what you want to do happens. This has little to do with controller or realism. In Mario and Zelda (Even Goldeneye and Halo) the character feels like an extension of your own hand so the gameplay was mainly constricted by your own abilities and not by the turning cycle of your car or jet ski etc. or how fast it is. Or if the character is a fat tub of lard who has the weight but the turning cycle of a humpback whale :-)
If you, like me, had the opportunity to experience Starfighter 3000 on the Acorn :-), you would see that what made it such a great game was that there was complete freedom. For instance, climbing into the atmosphere and dive-bombing a target with lazers and missile turrets firing at you with other fighters on your tail, pulling up at the last second (because you know you could) swerving to avoid more missles, flying lower and scraping mountains to get the fighters off your tail. Sure it may not have been the most graphically excellent game to date, but it succeded in creating a fun, close to perfect game, hence the total freedom and control. Star-X is a poor attempt at a remake of this classic game. A direct port, similar to that of the GBA Elite would have been much better. Elite another great game on the acorn, note total freedom aand control. Anyway,
Another game to accomplish this is, the mighty Halo. This game makes you feel that tyour weapon is an actual extension of your own hand, thus making the game far more enjoyable and gives a far longer lifespan.
So go ahead, boot up your Acorn, your N64, your xbox, let the rush you experienced, once again return and create eternal bliss. Get 120 stars for the seventh time, show Bowser who is boss and erase the flood once again, you wont regret it.
Have uninhibited fun, if the new games are not up to it then some of the old (ones certainly are.
And developers, help bring the good oldies to the younger generations (evidence of this is Mario Sunshine and many ports onto the GBA), don’t let them miss out, they’re still better than many of the latest games. So in my opinion, if done correctly any game can accomplish this, via total freedom and control inside the gaming environment, hopefully we (as gamers) will recieve more games based around this factor.

Of course their are other factors that will make a very good game, but in general, the most successful games and the best games do seem to involve complete freedom and control. If you can think of any other games too, please say so. As they say, credit where credits due

EXACTLY mate.
That is the essence of my post. Many games become successful because of their ability to involve the player and make them feel part of the game, and with this ability the game becomes a lot more fun and exilerating.

GTA3, One of the reasons that this game is great its beacause that you can free roam the place. Take what car you want, Be slow or Fast, Kill or not. What you see in the game you probably go to visit too.

There are other games, These are just two examples. Uselly the games that let you have control. Are mostly the ones that you most enjoy in too.
