Motives are less and less real and the reasons for the ‘hero’ to pick up his gun and shoot henchmen are becoming less and less realistic. More often than not it is the main characters wife/daughter that has been kidnapped by a bearded villain with a helicopter, ala Die Hard Vendetta.
Fair enough some games do have involving motives with plenty of reasons for your character to impale enemies on large spikes and take their soul but there is a lack of realisms that the gaming industry feel would make games boring. I think otherwise. When you think of public enemy number 1, Mr Sadam Hussain himself, do you expect his guards are constantly standing around the corner to illusively snipe at an intruder that ‘might just’ get into the secret lair? I don’t. We never see the enemies taking coffee breaks or going to relieve their bladders.
If we look at fast paced games like Vice City we can see plenty of non-realisms. I am not talking about the national securing being slack enough to torch a street full of people with a flamethrower and escape, oh no. I am talking about when you jump into your getaway car, there is never an engine failure, you wont run out of gas during a high speed chase, however in real life many criminals have been caught by car failure. Also when you are running from a S.W.A.T helicopter you never happen to stumble over a curb and be arrested by a cop. These are things that could easily be possible in reality but in games the dangers aren’t the accidents or misfortunes that can occur everyday, they are bigger and badder threats.
Now to take a look at sports games taking for example the Fifa series. When you play against the more ‘creative’ sides like Argentina or Brazil do you often see the computer-controlled players throwing themselves to the floor in a flood or tears in hope of winning a free kick? The answer is no, but this occurs frequently in real life (England Vs Brazil – World cup 02). In tournaments of high importance is there ever a saggy-breasted streaker running across the pitch hoping to sell their story to The Sun the next day? There isn’t, again showing how far the games are from reality.
Looking at first person shooters now, yes it is impressive how your character has a wide selection of guns but how on Earth would he manage to carry 18 weapons and a rocket launcher? Perhaps James Bond comes with one of those trolleys you get at the airport filled with weapons and ammo, or not. There should be a limit to the amount of guns you can carry and the option to throw guns away should be enforced. In Goldeneye on the N64, in all honesty who ever used the Klobb? Nobody? I thought not.
If we are to look at strategy games, taking for example roller coaster tycoon. Granted building and maintaining a theme park may be somewhat similar to the game but what sort of people visit the park after a fatal roller coaster crash that kills 18 people? Nobody? Correct! But in the came this hardly dents your park rating in the slightest, unrealistic to say the very least. And even if you name your park, “This is a death trap no do enter under any circumstances” you will get the same amount of visitors if you called your park, “Happy lovely joy world.”
Finally if we take a look at adventure games, yes your quest for something or other may be feasible but other things are not. In these games clues are fired at you from every direction telling you exactly what do to. An adventure is going somewhere not knowing what it is like and discovering new things. This does not include people telling you exactly what to do and where to go. If you think of a modern day adventure, for example trekking to the North Pole, the people on the expedition didn’t have plump talking penguins pointing them in the right direction. Adventure games should allow the user to figure things out for themselves as they are forced to do in real life.
I am still sat in the same chair as before only with a much clearer perspective as before on how games and reality truly are completely different. I still look like an idiot in my shorts despite the freezing cold weather and I now have a small soup stain on my t-shirt. You wouldn’t fine things like this is games, would you?

Good, I think alot of people secretly crave it. Right?
Alot of games are too easy, but that's only because alot of us on here are very good at games. It's also really hard to be origional when thinking of puzzles and tasks, seeing as alot of good ones have already been used. The games need to be made easier for the younger gamers that play them. I don't want them to make the games easier, but i understand that they aren't going to make the game rock hard and sell copies to the amatuer gamers.
I really didn't like Resident Evil GC because i felt it was too hard, and i think i'm a pretty good gamer. I found it annoying that you had to go from one side of the mansion, to the other without any mention that you had to do so. I don't agree with people hinting *cough* what you have to do, but i do agree that there should be some clues as what to do.
