I recently heard that Sony had teamed up with, I think it was IBM, anyway in a multi-million pound deal they will be creating a chip for which will then be the PS4, when the chip is complete it will take gaming to a whole new level.
Has anyone else heard about the developement of this chip or has someone been telling me porkies?

I think your jumping the gun with ps4 anyway. Once Nintendo and Microsoft join the console race Sony is going to have a tough time of it, we might not even see a ps4.

There is a lot of speculation that Sony is thinking of releasin gps3 early to combat xbox, but this wont happen as Sony would be fearful of being tarred with the same brush that sega did when it released the mega cd, 32x and then saturn in successive years.

13/03/2001 Sony, IBM and Toshiba announce a joint project at a minimum cost of $400 million to develop a new microchip. Toshiba originally built the Emotion Engine chip for the PS2. A joint statement said: "The three companies aim to design a super-computer on a chip with a wide variety of consumer applications. The result will be consumer devices that are more powerful than IBM's Deep Blue super-computer, operate at low power and access the broadband internet at ultra-high speeds" The codename for the new processor is 'The Cell'. Research and development on The Cell is scheduled to be complete and ready for mass production no sooner than 2005.

2005 is only 3 years away. PS2 will be 5 years old in October of that year. The average lifetime of any console is about 7 years. So I'd speculate that 'The Cell' will be used in the PS3, not the PS4, as well as a variety of other consumer white goods.
