Super Smash Bros. Melee is the sequel to the N64’s greatest beat ’em up game Super Smash Bros. It takes the same unique principal from the original game, four Ninty stars battling it out using weapons and their special moves, trying to cause as much damage as possible to their opponents to make their damage percentage meter rise, once its over 100% now’s the chance to hit a killer move, if all goes to plan your opponent will become airborne knocking them flying out of the arena making them loose one of their lives.

The main game where you battle your way through loads of characters is still there, as is Vs mode where you and up to four friends can battle as the Melee characters.
In this sequel there’s new modes, one of these new modes is the Coin mode. The purpose of the Coin mode is to collect as many coins as you can by the end of the match, sounds easy? Well you’d be a fool for thinking that. Every time you get hit coins fly out of you, but they also come from the other characters making the hurry to get the most coins more exciting. The amount that fly out depends on how much damage you take. There are different coloured coins, which are worth different amounts.
There are some mini games in Super Smash Brothers; some of them are the Bonus games in the Main Game. These are Break the Targets, where you have to break all ten of the targets, Board the Platforms, where you have to board all ten of the platforms. For both of these each character has a different stage and you have to use their moves to get onto certain platforms and to break certain targets. Race to the finish is also in the main game as well; you have to get the end while being stopped by three polygon fighters. In a new mini game called Home Run, you have to punch a bag and see how far you can get it. The last game is called Adventure; most of the fighters have their own environment where they have to do little challenges.
Another new part of SSBM is the chance to collect many of the new trophies. The trophies are little figurines of Ninty stars that aren’t playable in the main game; the trophies range from Toad and Misty from Pokèmon, to, Luigi and even the Ducks from the classic NES game Duck Hunt! You can collect trophies in a number of ways, first they will be for accomplishments in the main game and then you can use the coins that you’ve won in Coin Mode in the Melee Bubble Gum machine, there is no choice of what trophy you get though, it could be a new one that you don’t have a one you already have. You can view your trophies in the gallery, there you can also find out loads of information about the characters in the trophies.

Some of the characters from the first game were Mario, Link, Pikachu and Donkey Kong to name but a few, but this time round there’s a new line up featuring all the old characters and a couple of new ones. One of the new characters is the evil Bowser; he is one of the strong but slow super heavyweights of the game. Big old Bowser not only has the ability to breathe fire, he can perform the body press move where he simply falls onto the unlucky opponent breaking all their bones, he has a similar move called the Butt Drop! Another one of the new fighters is Princess Peach; she has the ability to float just as she can in Super Mario Advance. The Ice Climbers, who are joined by a cord, make an appearance in the game. As does Sheik from the Legend of Zelda the Ocarina of Time. Sheik will have the ability to teleport and will use his/her whip as a defensive move; Sheik will also be one of the faster characters in the game. In all there are 22 characters, I won’t list them all but some of the other new characters are Dr. Mario, Princess Zelda, Ganondorf and Falco Lombardi.

Before you can fight, you need somewhere to do it; they are bigger and have more interactivity than last time. Here are some of the arenas at which your battles are gonna take place. Congo Jungle is DK’s stage; you fight on logs, which are suspended over a waterfall. Onnet is Ness’ stage; the battles take place on the top of houses. Mute City is Captain Falcon’s home, you fight on this F-Zero X track while a race is taking place, you’ve got to watch out for the crafts as they go speeding by. Green Greens or Dreamland is Kirby’s stage. On the original game Peach’s castle was just a background, now you battle on the roof of her castle, which has never looked better. Ice Mountain is the home of the Ice Climbers. Venom is Fox’s stage. Link has two stages one is Hyrule Temple and the second is the Great Bay taken from his latest adventure Majora’s Mask, there’s a giant turtle to the right, he moves his long neck all the time. Pokèmon Stadium is home to all the Pokèmon. Yoshi’s stage is Yoshi’s Island, it looks like it did on the SNES game Super Mario World. Mushroom Kingdom is just like the old one but graphically better, it is also one of the hidden arenas. There is also Subcon, this is the world in Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Advance.

Now onto the items, the things you use to beat the hell out of your opponents. The Ray Gun fires a green blast at your opponent. The Pokèball chucks out random Pokèmon, you better get out of the way before their power is released. The Red and Green shells are to be chucked at people, as is the Bob-Bomb. The Mushroom will make you giant; the flower lets you throw flames at the opposing fighter. The Homerun bat lets you hit the other fighters for a homerun, watch them fly. The Beam Sword is just like a Light Saber and was one of the best weapons in the original. A Motion Sensor Bomb goes off if anyone touches it once it’s been planted. If you have the Parasol you can float in the air slowly. The Starman makes you invincible for a short amount of time, just like in the Mario games. The Super Scope is the light gun from the SNES. But the items on SSBM aren’t just used as weapons, some of the items are used to restore your health like the Heart Container, this useful item will heal your health by 100%! The Food heals you by 10% and the Maximum Tomato heals you by 50%. These are only a few of the items; there are more of them to play around with.

SSBM looks to be one of the must have titles for the GameCube, with it’s unique game play and the stunning graphics, this is out and out fun. It’s had its release in the US and it’ll be released over here on May 24th, lets just hope that it isn’t delayed.

It just didn't appeal to me mate. I prefer beat-em-up's like Guilty Gear X etc.

To be honest, Smash Bros has been upstaged by Monkey Ball in my household, it's the only game that's rooted in my GameCube at the moment.
