If the graphics in a game are good, the game is said to be better than what it would be if it had poorer graphics. You know what I mean, you and I would prefer to play a game that was smooth and flowing rather than a game that was sharp and jagged. But, I preferred the games that had these graphics, the games of the past. Since 3D graphics are a must have nowadays, I think that the games industry has lost what they used to have. Before the PlayStation and the N64, I feel that the game makers made the games to be enjoyed, rather than making them so that the money would roll in. It’s harsh to say that both the PlayStation and the N64 didn’t have any games like this, they did but they were rare to find. Whereas on my MegaDrive, I owned about 10 games, 3 of which I would include in my favourite 5 games ever. Below is a list of my favourite games, varying in genres, but all brilliant games. These are the games that I feel were made to be enjoyed. Yes, some of the games were over marketed and may have been made by “money-grabbing” companies, but I feel that these are the best games that I have owned.

Streets of Rage – Sega MegaDrive

I owned both the Streets of Rage games, after buying my MegaDrive off of a friend along with 10 games. Streets of Rage was, and still is, one of my favourite games. I would play it throughout the day if I was bored, always trying to complete it, rather than just mucking about. It was just one of those games, I couldn’t complete it. But that didn’t put me off, I loved the game. If you haven’t played it, it’s a side scrolling beat-them-up. Enemies would start to appear, and you had to kill them and reach the end of the “level”. There were so many different environments and enemies, and some of the enemies had weapons. Some of them had glass bottles, that you could use after you had killed that enemy. The bottle could brake, which was so cool. You could also play the game with 2-players. This was such a great add-on. You and your mate, or dad, could try and complete the game together. It was also really strategic; you needed to think whether you were going to sacrifice one of your own lives to bring back your friend after he had been killed. The game got progressively harder as well, starting with street thugs and going onto karate kicking ladies. The game was just untouchable; I’d say it lasted me about 6 months playing it, which is about 12 times as long as MGS2 lasted me.

Flashback – Sega MegaDrive

This was the 90’s MGS, the 90’s RPG. The game had you playing as this dude, I don’t know his name. I don’t really know what the goal was either, it didn’t really need one. You’d just sit down and play it, and the game would flow. It would lead you from one part of the game to the next, making you think about what you had just done and what you were going to do. I’d think about what I was going to next when I was lying in my bed, trying to get to sleep. It had you battling enemies that could become invisible for a while, and you had to decide when to attack them. The game was just so clever. You would need to get a job, from the job centre, to earn money. You would them use this money to buy a certain item that you needed to get further. I never completed the game; I ended up in a room that I couldn’t get out of. But this is the only game I would give 10/10, it was just that good.

Pokémon Blue – Nintendo GameBoy

Pokémon Blue is such a good game. It mixes a number of genres. Fighting, strategy and RPG are a few. I know I’m not the only one that liked the game; it would be hard to say you didn’t. You may not like the whole idea of Pokémon, but you would have to admit that the game is good. It took me about 20 hours to complete the game, that’s just beating the 4 people at the end and getting Mewtwo. I lost interest after getting Mewtwo, and started to feel that the Pokémon series had been used too much. I thoroughly enjoyed the game because I never got bored of the constant battles, I don’t know how I didn’t get bored looking at it now though. The fact that the “types” of Pokémon weren’t as simple as “rock, paper, and scissors” also kept me playing. If there were only 3 types, I think I would have got bored. But the Pokémon themselves were so original, none of them looked similar unless they had evolved from one another.

Road Rage – Sega MegaDrive

My dads a huge fan of motorbikes, and I sometimes sit and watch the races myself. I didn’t expect to like this game, but I ended up loving it. Although it may sound really simple just riding a bike and trying to win, I loved the fact that you earned money from winning the races and had to buy new and better bikes to be able to go onto the next league. I used to hate certain riders after they’d hit me off my bike and send me to the back of the pack. Using different weapons also made the game really enjoyable. Using the Police Baton would knock them off in one hit, where as you’d have to keep punching them to hit them off. Some of the courses were really cool as well, some had looping corners and some were very straight. This meant that you needed to choose the right bike, because some bikes were faster than others and some were more agile than others.

Jack and Daxter – PlayStation 2

This is the only game I have really enjoyed since the graphics of games have been improved. The game was not so original, but the places that the orbs were in were just so cool. You needed to ride flying bikes to get some, shoot the yellow orb stuff at boxes to get others. And Daxter was also pretty funny. The game had some really nice places as well, all splendid to look at. I think that this was one of the first games to actually use the PS2’s power. The shininess of some of the places was just amazing. The enemies were also very original and funny. The game wasn’t easy either, which is always good. It took me a while to get all 100 orbs, and I enjoyed getting everyone. I hope the sequel comes along soon; I’ll definitely be getting it.

As you can see, a lot of my top 5 was on the old consoles, the MegaDrive and the GameBoy. I think it’s the simple games that I enjoy, rather than the “super duper” games like MGS2. These games were just so enjoyable to play, they really were. I hope games to come can rival my top 5, so here’s to the past.

Good topic, undeservedly ignored, streets of rage was pure quality although i actually prefered double dragon as the moves looked cooler and less mechanical and it was a bit more colourful!
