In await for the new tomb raider game coming out in February on the ps2 games company PIEDOS have done what they do best and made a cheap bootleg of a successful game. First it was metal beer solid, then final fantasy XXX and now they bring the virtual world into the New Year with the release of Larry croft: fridge raider.

Larry croft was a truck driver from Norwich who liked nothing more than to sit infront of the telly with a cold beer and a warm girl friend. However after finding god he dismisses his responsibility at work and decides not to work ever again. Unfortunately this had repercussions causing Cindy (his 17-year-old highschool drop out girlfriend) to leave him, this was ok as he still had blow up Brenda and he managed to figure out how to work the microwave. You get thrown into the plot right at the start with a cut scene of the above. Then you gain control of Larry and are able to wander about his house.

Your first mission is a simple training exercise that allows you complete freedom of his 2 bedroom ground floor flat. This level gives you a chance to home in on your skills as you follow the objective that is to find the remote control. Larry is very mobile which is surprising when you see the size of his stomach. He can do general things such as lifting items, looking around, jumping and if you press L1 while moving you can waddle just that little bit faster.

Once you have got the hang of things and achieved the assignment you can sit back to watch another cut scene showing bailiffs pilfering your telly while your in the bog. Once returning from the loo Larry finds a note explaining that his 14 inch portable will be sold at auction the following week in order to pay his bills. Knowing he won’t be able to live with out it and the fact that the living room now only consists of a armchair and a self full of copies of the daily sport he decides to go against his new beliefs and get a job to buy it back.
This failed.
Larry must now go about different areas of Norwich in hot pursuit of clues that will lead him to his precious telly in a tale of action, theft and kebabs. However he’s not alone in his adventure as 2B (the flat above him) have a seemingly fanatical interest in the tv as not only is it portable but it has teletext. Will he reach the auction house in time before it is sold off or will he be forced to take up a sport such as jacks or bowls to pass the time, the answer lies with you...

Of course with this being based on tomb raider there are some factors that are similar. For one both Lara and Larry are 34DD, another is that both their ponytails bounce when moving (maybe they use the same shampoo?). But the key similarity is the game play.
Levels consist of getting from A to B and maybe C for a quick snack. As i said Larry can run, jump and even do a flip when the time is right (though he does need a saucepan and pancake at hand). 2B are your average yobs and will do anything to stop Larry reaching his prize and like tomb raider they have alot of dogs that like a good but kicking now and then.

The biggest likeness between the two games though has to be the variety of items they can use. Lara usually goes around with a bag full of treats for the bag guys consisting of flares, knifes and the odd medipack or two. PIEDOS have got the right idea but instead in Larry’s red furry elmo backpack he has treats for himself including chocolate chip cookies, a half eaten peanut butter sandwich and a chop bar. But don’t start thinking hes all harmless as attached to his belt he has an assortment of weapons, each has its own little attributes specially designed for the job in hand. Default weapon of choice is a stainless steal spatula with the words ‘property of McDonalds’ inscribed onto the handle. But as you progress through the levels this won’t be enough so you’ll gain new weapons to use like a shoe horn, menu card from your local chines restaurant and the almighty donna kebab with holster.

No one really knows if this game will be a hit or not but ones things for sure, you’ll never look at a truck driver in the same way again.
