Is anyone able to play Video CD fomat movies on the PS2?

No you can't play VCDs on the PS2, Wookiee will go balistic if he sees this again :-)
I'm 99% sure you can't.
However, with the original PSX you could buy add ons that fit into the back of the console and allowed you to. Expect something similar for the PS2. (Although the ps2 cracking zone is very quiet at the mo;(

When the Harddrive and linux kit is released I hoping there will be a possibility that software will be avalible to play video CD's and possibly DIVX too.

Not 100% sure but I do not think you can play Video CD's on PS2.
