For example on the PS2 almost all the top games have been sequels (Grand Theft Auto 3/Vice City, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, TimeSplitters 2, Final Fantasy X, etc), and the same can be said for the Game Cube (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc) and the X-Box (very few console exclusives). Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that the quality of games is falling, in fact in my opinion quality is a all time high, with the astounding new graphics which are improving with almost every game released, and new advanced types of game play pushing even veteran gamers skills too the limits and beyond. But almost every aspect of gaming is suffering from lack of originality.
Storylines, for instance, how many times in the last year have you picked up an action/RPG game and had to rescue your family/friends/the world/the universe from the clutches of an evil villain/race/llama? Or a strategy game and have to fight the same old enemies whether they be the Soviets, Orcs or Zerg. Fighting games its just some super powerful organisation bringing together the worlds greatest fighters and setting them on each other in a fight to the death to find out who is the greatest. Even in racing games, where the storyline doesn’t really matter it’s the same old “a man pushed to the edge to become the greatest llama racer that has ever been”.
Game play is also being hit hard, especially now since every possible variation of 2D gaming has been used up, and even with the extra dimension(s) the possibilities of different types of game play is quickly being exhausted. Racing games are now either one of two (basic) categories: Realism or Arcade, either every detail is the same as in real life, down to the oil filters and dip stick, or almost completely abstract with rocket launchers and speed boasts. Now for a beat ‘em up to be truly known great, they must make player perform complex combo moves in a blink of an eye and a flash of thumb movement. Platformers and Action games were given a new lease of life with the advent of true three-dimension gaming, but now how many times can a small furry animal or fat plumber jump on top of a equally cute creature to gain a gold coin, or have a man battle a helicopter on top of a 60 story tall skyscraper with the ever present fit-in-your-pocket rocket launcher and still feel exciting and new.
Another problem is the fact that most of the truly original games being released are scaring away gamers, due to there strangeness, I mean who really wants to play a big yellow giant helping people, or a cat that can travel through time, when you can play an old comfortable role like the avenging father or crusader.
Although if it continues as it is the gaming industry will be fine for many years to come, but will people buy Grand Theft Auto 41: Middlesborough, or Destruction Derby 19: Skoda Wars.

thank you for re-wording it Dr Zéus
"Live your life now, look forward to the future."
Theory is, gaming will change gradually which also means the whole setup of originality. I do prefer the old normal crusade adventures and all that in RPGs but too many of them would not do justice to the industry.
It's a good thing that games are changing, the only worrying thing is if they are changing for worse. But right now, things are looking dandy.
