I was in Tesco on Sunday, intending to go in and get the perishable good, the bread, milk, cheese and the like, to last through the Christmas period, when I realised what a fantastic setting it would be for a racing game.

You control a character with a trolley, and you have to race around the supermarket obtaining certain items, racing against other 'shoppers' in order to get all the goods on the shopping list, then racing to the check-out.

Then I realised that this sounded like Supermarket Sweep, so I decided that the game could be further improved, by adding guns to the trolleys.

I demonstrated this to my wife at this point, but she was a little embarrassed by my actions and told me to stop.

Of course, the developers would have to recreate the somewhat unusual physics of a trolley, given that they rarely go where you want them to, and it's possible to tip them if you turn too sharply, as high speeds, with a full load.
There would be a number of characters to choose from, each with different skills.

The mother and child combo would be particularly lethal, given the childs throwing of items at competing trolleys. Another character would perhaps be a specialist in the 'value' items and poison you with value cola. There would be the lad on the beer run, elderly folk that travel in pairs, looking slow, but winning through in a tortoise and hare type way.

Power-ups would also be an integral part of gameplay, with typical speed ups and extra fire power being standard things, but others, such as bottles of sticky treacle to slow opponents down, pepper to make them sneeze, and drop things andother such food-related or supermarket related items that could somehow be contrived to hamper the chances of your opponents. What better way to hamper them, than a Christmas hamper, left right in their path!

Also, the game could be modelled on REAL SUPERMARKETS!!! Pretty much all Tesco stores are the same, and it looks to be similar with all of the other chain stores, but you know, you could have different value products and the like. Then you could have levels set in other huge department stores, Harrods, Hamleys and the like, for other such shopping mayhem, or maybe that could be saved for an inevitable sequel.

Just think, recreating the fun and excitement of the weekly shopping trip, only now add the challenge of racing people that are actually aware of what you are doing, and try to race back! Enjoy blowing those aisle blockers out of the way, drop items behind yourself to slow down opponents, load up the trolley and get out first!

This game would certainly be a little different for a racing game.

Different in a sucky way, probably, just like real supermarkets...

On harder modes you could have X number of women with you, who keep dragging you to the side to look at something, and refuse to let you collect anything untill you've checked it's price in another store.

You could get bonus points for knocking over pyramid stacked tins of beans and getting in the under 10 items speed checkout.
