Originally consoles had loading times. Then carts came around and the whole market went away from PC gaming- the whole idea of the console was that you didn't have loading times, keyboards, and installations.
Then you get CD's coming in, and suddenly all consoles are based on PC architecture, with modems, HDDs, keyboards and loading times!
And just recently, the PS2 has been created with architecture completely different from that of a PC... although as developers will say, that's not necissarily a good thing!
So, with consoles entering the online age, do you think that the convergence of consoles and PCs will continue. Of course, the underlying point of consoles is entertainment, so don't expect the Xbox to have MS Word on it!
However, we could see trackballs in controllers, more add ons and PC peripherals, and even upgrades to consoles- better DVD driver software and the like.
Which poses the question: is this a good thing?

At the moment it seems like they won't- they're being bought up by big publishers! :(

But then again, coming back onto gaming, how long before games will be so complex that they will all need tens of millions of pounds budget to make? Already we see games like FF and Shenmue racking up such figures- will more and more follow?
Nothing to do with PCs, but hey!

You see, first there were consoles, then they play CDs, then they play DVDs...
Well, when the next consoles are made, surely writable DVDs will be commonplace. So now you would have a console that could play DVDs and CDs, act as a DVD-R (which will be replacing VCRs), and there may even be the possibility to have games SAVED ON DISC!
(for those no tin the know, DVD's store data magnetically, not optically. So, unlike CDs, they can be rewritten as amny times as you want!)

Then we shall have the all in one entertainment system.
