Here’s a run-down of 2002 in gaming:

- The year began with Squaresoft announcing FREE gaming of Final Fantasy XI for a few months. Yeah, like that’s going to happen…

- Bleem, the masters of console emulation, dissolved. Pish!

- Sony had a very happy new year when they sold 5,000,000 (5 million for the innumerate people out there) PS2’s through December.

- There was rumours of the Itoy, a wand-like object, could be used in the next Harry Potter game.

- Nike sued Sega for stealing an idea from one of their adverts for the ad for NBA2K2. The case was later settled.

- An amazing 30 games went online in Japan on the PS2!

- Research discovered that piracy was leeching £1.9 billion from the gaming industry each year!

- Gamers in Thailand are not allowed by play games after 10pm, following an order earlier this year and it was “in order to create a better social order”.

- Halo was given the award for Game of the Year at the Academy of Interactive Arts awards.

- The last Dreamcast was produced, although there’s still several hundred thousand lying around in a warehouse if you really want one. Sob.

- The creators of Doom were finally relieved of a chip on their shoulder after a court ruled that they were not responsible for the Columbine shootings

- A film of Dead of Alive was announced to be in production

- Anyone remember the Pokemon Mini? Nope? Didn’t’ think so. It was a handheld launched by the creators of Pokemon and I cannot find records of what actually happened to this mysterious handheld.

- The new Delta Force game was going to be pulled off the shelves because it apparently reflected events in Afghanistan. Jaybus, can’t the BBFC just shut their pencil-pushing mouths for once?

- Smaller X-Box controllers for those with small hands (or the Japanese, of course) have been distributed in Japan and will soon see the light of day here in sunny Britain.

- Sega announced (to the delight of many gamers, including myself) that they would be re-working many of the old classics for the X-Box.

- “Don’t hold your breath,” Squaresoft claimed, after announcing a 2004 release date for Final Fantasy XI, and when sods law is your only rule, that means late, very late 2004…

- Some smart Alec made a 3-inch Game Boy, calling it the “Game Man”. Whatever next?

- Well, as a start, Silent Hill is being made into a film…

- ELSPA did research which revealed that teenage games were in the minority. How odd…

- The Game Boy Advance sold 1,000,000 copies.

- A Medal of Honour flight sim was canned.

- A mysterious title called “Super Mario X” was briefly displayed on the official GameCube site…

- The X-Box dropped £100 and for those who already bought one, you were allowed to pick two games and a controller.

- The GameCube later received a price reduction of £30.

- One of the co-creators of the X-Box quit. Now there’s a surprise…

- It was announced that a theatre production of Tekken would be made. Heh. There’s half my readers gone…

- Unveiled from a report in 1999, it became apparent that Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo, but they declined their offer.

- A school shooting in Germany was from someone who has an avid games player. Well there’s another surprise…

- It was announced that the PS3 would appear in 2005.

- Another Yanky gimp shot his friend at point blank range, killing him.

- An Ape Escape movie has begun production.

- The PS1 dropped to under £50!

- Those plonkers at Rockstar made GTA3 Windows-XP incompatible, so people like me had to download a sodding patch to get it working…

- It was announced that Zelda would be the first game to utilise the GameCube’s ability to “interact” with a GBA.

- Remember those screenshots of Solid Snake skateboarding? Well, they aren’t true, according to some site *cough*SpecialReserve*cough* but the truth it, that they are true. The skateboarding game in question was made by Konami, who also make Metal Gear Solid, and the two teams simply made an agreement that the skateboarding could be used in it! Get ye facts right SR!

- Within two months of it’s released, the X-Box was cracked!

- In a few months of its release, Grand Theft Auto 3 sold an excellent 600,000 units!

- However, this pales in comparison to the sales of the Final Fantasy series – reaching 40,000,000 sales in 15 years!

- The “life is short – play more” advert was banned after over 100 complaints!

- Even more shockingly, it was announced that the GameCube would probably be Nintendo’s console.

- Fake pictures of a cell-shaded GBA game were released on the net. Ah, the pleasures of picture editing!

- Winning Eleven 6 joined the elite few who have sold 1,000,000, in Japan, of course!

- The S controller for the X-Box (the smaller one!) was canned in Europe, but I believe it is coming here now.

- Microsoft were in trouble again after a French filmmaker bird claimed that the “life is short – play more” advert was a copy of one of her films. Sigh…

- An X-Box rep claimed that the X-Box 2 would be out before the PS3 (so, that means either 2004 or early 2005) and would be around near the next World Cup. If my (lack of) football knowledge serves me correctly, that would mean 2006, but that doesn’t line up with my first statement. Methinks Sony are trying to rush out PS3 to beat X-Box 2 to the plate!

- The world’s biggest Turok fan sat outside his local shop 50 days before the launch of Turok because he loves the game so much.

- A Return to Castle Wolfenstein film was announced to be in production!

- The Tony Hawk’s games contract was extended to 2015 earlier this year, meaning loads more Tony Hawk’s games. I can see it now – Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 16!

- Sony lost a court case in Australia after the court announced that mod chipping was not illegal.

- EA sports set up their own record label called ‘EA Big’.

- Acclaim offered anyone who changed their name to Turok for a year, an X-Box and £500.

- After all the guarantees that TimeSplitters 2 would be online, the online-mode was canned. Ah well, I’m much happier with my PC online games and 56k modem anyway…

- The PS2 went online in America on the 27th August, and four months on, we still have nothing!

- Konami offered the chance for your name to be on a dog tag in Metal Gear Solid: Substance, as they did with MGS2!

- Acclaim paid $10,000 to parents who named their child Turok.

- There were plans of a budget range for PS2 other than Platinum, but nothing has been heard of that as of yet…

- Both the X-Box and PS2 had massive price reductions, to £159.99 and £169.99 respectively.

- Greece made playing computer games illegal, only to overturn it a few weeks later!

- There were persistent rumours of Metal Gear Solid 3 being X-Box only! Oh the humanity!

- A GBA steering wheel was released. You just HAVE to laugh out loud at that!

- An Egyptian was jailed for four months after refusing to stop playing Tetris aboard a flight.

- X-Box live will apparently launch on March 14th 2003, exactly a year after the console launched in the UK.

- Acclaim offered to pay anyone’s speeding fines if they speed on October 11th, celebrating the release of Burnout 2.

- Nintendo sponsored Des Lynam’s moustache…

- A man died in an Internet café after just playing games for just too damn long!

- Amazingly, the GBA outsold the PS2 in Japan!

- GTA3 won Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards.

- Nintendo were fined £100m fine for price fixing for seven years.

- A gamer insured his fingers for £375k!

- Sony claim that the UK PS2 online service will be up and running in Spring 2003. We shall see…

- Despite reports that the GameCube would be Nintendo’s last console, they are indeed working on a GameCube 2!

- GTA3 on the GBA was canned! Wahoo!

- Microsoft gave out X-Box 2 development kits to many developers, including Rare.

- In early November, it was said that Gran Turismo 4 is 50% complete.

- A Pac-Man movie is in the works.

- GTA: Vice City broke a weekend sales record, selling 250,000 copies!

- Many celebrities have been modelled for the Sims online!

- Pokemon is still the craze in Japan, with the Sapphire/Ruby games getting 2,000,000 pre-orders!

- Hideo Kojima is developing a light-sensitive vampire-hunting game on the GBA!

- Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are to be turned into video-game characters! Eek! It burns!

- Currently, Microsoft still has eyes for buying Sega…

- The Getaway has been edited in Australia. Another one bites the dust…

- There were reports that GameCube’s only cost $20 to make. This is total bull, report Nintendo.

- The Japanese version of Burnout was canned! We get something before they do for once! W00t!

- 600 dance mats for use in the game Dancy Stage Euromix were stolen from a van on the A1!

- And finally, the following games are still awaiting release, despite their announcement many months ago:

“In a move that may worry many of you, British Nuclear Fuels told eleven of its employees not to come to work in the morning when they were discovered to have distributed an email featuring an altered image of Bart Simpson.”

Here’s to the future – I hope you all have a great Christmas and a cracking New Year!

Yeah, I knew I'd make mistakes, but you have to make allowances - I worked for days and days on this damn topic. It's 9 pages in Word on size 12. So don't go pickin' holes in it!

I'm off for a rousing game of Medal of Honour online. Ciao!

And you have made numerous mistakes in the games.

For example, Mario Party 4 was released quite a while ago..
