Take the N64 for example, it didn't have very many features like internet capabilities but the it was worth buying because of the great games that were brought out such as Zelda, Goldeneye or Perfect dark which are all classic games.
That's the very thing we want to see in today's consoles but sadly there just ain't enough of them. Fair enough that the good games we do have are very good indeed but for a successful console we need successful games too.
That was exactly the case for the PS1.
It's not only the console that was successful for Sony it was the games too.
The Ps2 gave birth to some of the best games around such as, Driver Grand Theft auto and even the most successful game title of all Grant Turismo.
The Console wasn't that powerful compare to today's consoles and there were hardly any if not no extra features for it at all.
Who cares? It was the games that brought the punters knocking on Sony's front door.
The name of the console manufacturer can make a difference but not that much of a difference.
It has been proven before though that the manufacturer of the console can make a difference like in Sony's case when they launched the very successful Ps2.
It does help to have a powerful console like the Ps2, which produced great games like GT3 and GTA3.Once again it's proven that it's not only the Console that matters it the games too.
A manufacturer with a good reputation for making consoles can also help a great deal when making a console.
Take Sega's case for example.
They didn't do a very good job of the mastersystem or the Mega drive.
They did try hard though with the Dreamcast bust sadly they had made to many mistakes in the past for it to be successes with the public.
Poor Old. Sega they did try hard this time round but obviously they just didn't try hard enough.
A chilling reminder at what can happen when things go wrong for console developers.
So if you want to be successful in the future when making new consoles you need a good first impression, which seems to be the case for Microsoft with their fantastic X-box.
The console is packed with features.
One of the many anticipated game releases on due out for the X-Box is Halo.
I think that in years to come Microsoft will be setting an example of how a console and their games should be made.
In other words they will set a guidline of what to do for other console manufacturers.
As for Sega well they'll just be showing "what not to do," when making new consoles.
So there you have it. What you need if you want to be successful at making games consoles.
Remember when you're making a new console make it a good one because first impressions always count.

Maybe the Saturn wasn't all it could have been, I don't know much about that but the Megadrive was excellent, and pretty successful too. Maybe if they hadn't have released the Mega CD and the 32X people would have been more keen on the Saturn, and given it the initial boost it needed to get developers on board.
The Master System was screwed out of the US market by Nintendo.
Developers and publishers had to sign a deal with Nintendo to release NES games, which forbid them from releasing games on any other system for at least a year after their last NES title.
The Sega Master System fared quite well in Europe though, where such rules didn't apply, and was possibly more popular than the NES. No doubt because of Sega excellent first party titles like Hang-On, Out Run, Space Harrier and the like.
I suppose what gave the SNES a huge boost in it's early days was that the most popular arcade game of the time was available on it, Street Fighter 2. It was some time later that the Megadrive version came about.
The arcades aren't nearly as influential on home gaming anymore though.
