This is a question mainly for males, but females can answer too...not that I could've stopped you anyway.

BEFORE Conscription was introduced, would you have volunteered to join the Army?

Really think about it, would you be willing to give up your family, friends, job to go be a soldier, where you could easily be killed? And of course, you may have to live with the fact that you've killed others (if you did join up).

I'm not sure about my own answer yet.

Nope i wouldn't want to sign up. But back then they felt they had to didn't they ? All them advertisments, about letting your country down if you didnt sign up. And men who didn't go were thought of as cowards and were given a white feather i think, from the females to show they were cowards.
I think back then many people didn't want to go, and thought they had to, to prove they wern't cowards etc

They encouraged entire groups of friends to join, so chances are, at least ONE of your mates would be with you.

And yes of course I would have joined, anyone who says otherwise is a coward

Are you joking? I can think of lots of good reasons not to fight in WW1 and not many good reasons to sign up (I personally do not consider nationalism or trying to look brave particularly good reasons).

There were perfectly valid reasons to be a conscientious objector (pacifist, socialist... whatever).

Yes, if england was under threat from the Germans then, yes.

As Loki said, there are PLENTY of reasons as to why you shouldn't sign up/participate in the war. I am a glorified conscienscious objector, and damn proud of it. Call me a coward, or a buzzard or whatever - I don't really care. I'm not really a patriotic person, and I am not one to die for my country, and all I say to those who are is good luck. A solution to not having to fight for your country is to sign peace treaties, but then that's a lot more difficult than implied. In a nutshell, I will not fight for my country.

Some of my self-professed "hard" friends act macho by claiming that they will go out and kill everyone - a likely story (not). Unlike my friends, I think little of myself, and am a more real person than they can ever be. They need to be introduced to the rough and tumble that the world unforunately is.

Going out to war is almost like signing your own death warrant - death is almost guaranteed. Death is not something I'm looking foward to, and I want to do when my time is up - not prematurely. If I was conscripted, I would simply leave the country, albeit a little difficult, I would do anything to wriggle out of war, because its a pointless act that destorys millions of lives.

Hey, I'm not saying I would go "Yeah, war, let's all sign up and get killed" but if I had to, I would
