One of PS2`s earliest successes (arriving in the second wave of games, only a few months after launch) was Star Wars Starfighter. Described as being the best Star Wars game around for many years by many knowledgeable reviewers (who included the release of Rogue Leader on GC), Starfighter was a great game. In the past, Star Wars and great gameplay are elements that haven`t always gone hand in hand, however, things have changed since the arrival of PS2. Lucas Arts have come up with a decent Star Wars game, and are now virtually ready to release a sequel to tie in with the release of the movie, Episode II.

Arriving in a few short months will be Jedi Starfighter, a new adventure featuring new characters such as Adi Gallia (who you may possibly have heard of from Jedi Power Battles) as well as familiar heroes like Nym and Reti who starred in the original. This time, its not just about piloting... its about piloting as a jedi. The new "force moves" will take flying to a new level, changing the look of Star Wars games forever. As a Star Wars fan myself, any Star Wars game looks good to me, but this one looks set to be something really special.

As you`d expect with a sequel there are the usual improvements, graphical enhancements, better particle effects, a more solid storyline, more missions, more options... the usual sequel type stuff. Unlike EA, Lucas Arts are aiming at making this a true sequel. However, of all the new elements to the game, there are two that stick out in my mind above all else:

1) The force moves - The ability to cause lightning attacks to aid you in a dogfight against numerous enemy craft adds a new edge to tactical play. Other moves such as enhanced shields and special powerful attacks will also contribute. Combined with this is a more accurate display of your shield and hull integrities, as well as read outs for the status of your weapons. This means you could be in the situation of heavy shields but no lasers, in which case you could fly as a distraction right in front of an enemies nose, aiding yourself with an extra force shield. Or perhaps proceed with a full on, near suicidal attack, launching every force move you had available whilst risking your ship. There is no doubt in my mind that it will move away from the "shoot or run" tactics that previous Star Wars games have had.

2) Co-operative mode - Thank the force!!! I can`t believe this, its so amazing! Not since Star Wars Arcade on the 32X have I played a decent co-operative Star Wars game. Whilst reading an article recently at IGN, I discovered there will be two player co-operative games:

"There's also a cooperative two-player mission mode, though, where two more craft are available." - IGN

This I find to be more exciting than even MGS2! I can see myself sat at home, my brother and I working together to complete missions, enjoying every moment of this potentially brilliant game. To me, a co-operative mode is possibly the most important of all the extra gaming modes. World Of Illusion is probably still the best co-op game I`ve played, but I`m certainly hoping that the release of Jedi Starfighter will see that change!

So there we go, arriving (fingers crossed) in the spring, the sequel to Starfighter is looking hot. The question now is, can it succeed when everybody has just spent their money on MGS2?

Interestingly, this was the release date of several Star Wars items nearly three years ago. The book, episode 1, was released then I believe, and it is always a date George Lucas has tried to play on - and so he should do!

I don't see why not. MGS2 isn't the last word in PS2 gaming. It might be sacrilegious to some people, but I'm looking forward to quite a few games more than MGS2.
