Englandhas never been, and probably never will be a country known for it's great weather all year round. And bad weather can lead to bad things in football. With exessive amounts of rain every month pitches can't last long with 22 pairs of studded boots trampling on it, week-in week-out. Even with the underground-heating, pitches can't last that long, as the heat cannot evaporate all that water! A solution is needed, and having it sooner may be better, for the sake of English football. Players cannot play well on a pitch where the ball cannot be used!

Look at the weather recently. We always see massive down-poors in England around this time of year, and it doesn't neccisarily stop there! It's also been known to find flooding and bad weather in the summer, so no matter when football is played, bad weather is always on the case! Wet pitches not only mean that the ball can't move as effectively, but also means that the pitch is destroyed easier! Instead of green grass, we begin to see piles of brown mud, leading to very slippery surfaces, and a poorer display of football. So neither the fans or the players are satisfied.

One answer to keeping the pitches dryer is to add retractable roofs to almost every league club. But problems would occur when trying it comes to the financial side of things! It would first of all cost a fortune (at least) to have the roof created and fitted by builders. And costs would also increase when it comes to keeping the roof clean and in working consition. This would only be available to clubs like Man United, and would probably still cause them a few problems, possibly having to alter Old Traffrd!

All living things need sun, water and oxygen. So the retractable roof may have to be transparent, to allow light to pass through. And several holes or gaps may also be required to help with the oxygen and water supplies. Watering would be a problem without all of the rain, so maybe some could be allowed through. I think this would be a good idea, but money would be the only problem. And the roof wouldn't be closed ALL of the time. Only during heavy amounts of rain. And due to the money, non-league clubs would still have to suffer.

Another idea is to just cover the pitch, tennis style. But those plastic covers aren't really good enough, as i'm sure that a strong gust of wind could just easily pick it up! And problems would also occur when trying to remove the cover. Large puddles of water could form ontop, making the cover heavier, and harder to remove. What would be required is something strong that does not allow water to build up on it's surface, and somehting that can easily be removed.

So what about electronically controlled sliding covers?? You know, like the ones you get with heated swimming pools, at rich people's houses. Rain could easily be swept off of the cover, but once again, money would be a big issue! It would also probably require 4 individual sliding covers to cover the whole pitch, and each one could come from a area of the ground. But that'd lead to another problem, as it'd be hard to set up where the covers would come from and return to.

So overall, I think that my first idea would be better, as it has also been proven to work. Just look at some of the venues on Japan for this year's World Cup. England could learn a thing or two! I think that the pitches do need to be cared for better. Just look at Old Trafford, and how many times it was re-turfed last season! I know that it was down to the weather, but surely there must be some way of helping to prevent these frequent problems?? Maybe the FA are working on something right now!
