When will it all stop? When will games consoles reach a point when there is nothing else that can be done to make them better, when technology has reached it’s limit or at least got to the point when it will be far too expensive to sell machines at a reasonable price.

In my opinion the day consoles can no longer be technology advanced will be a great day for gamers, when consoles reach their point when nothing else can be done to make them better the gaming world will breath a very relieved sigh. From that point onwards games developers will come into their own, more concentration will be put into the games and consequently they will get better and every game developing company will be competing against each other even more so to strive to make their game just that little bit better than anyone else’s meaning games will start to be more enjoyable and generally better which is definently a good thing.

Now if this happens we will all miss the console wars (you love them really) and all the hype and excitement surrounding a consoles launch but it’s very unlikely at least in our lifetimes, if ever that consoles will reach a point where they can not be bettered. So that oh so great day will not come for our generation of gamers and when it does we will be looked back on as the years when “They used to use the Internet to play other gamers around the world”.

So I begin to wonder just how will it all end, what will be after consoles, what sort of devices and systems will we have to make the gaming experience all the more better? Home virtual reality systems or some sort of chip put in our brains that makes any gaming world we desire come alive, maybe not, maybe it will be more like that one episode of Red Dwarf called ‘Better than life’ where the crew had special VR system where the game was to lead the best life they could, they was able to do anything they wished at any place any time all in a lifelike game world that they controlled. In a way this could be the ultimate goal because it will give everyone what they want and no one could possibly not like it. That however could lead to problems such as boredom maybe? As you will have done everything you ever wanted to and have nothing to look forward to so it brings me back to this, are these days of console wars the best days for gamers?

So maybe these times now are the best times for gaming, there certainly the best times so far and maybe they could be one of the best ever, in the future games could go as far as to be too realistic? When playing a game there’s always the knowledge in the back of your head that it’s just a game no matter how immersed into it you are, whereas in the distant future games are likely going to be pretty much as realistic as possible and could become more of an dominant aspect of life especially if peoples ‘in the future’ predictions are true. Fair enough not these consoles but the consoles in the distant future will in my opinion be the best times in gaming because if predictions are correct and gaming goes from consoles and becomes more of a home based VR system then the perfect split between gaming and reality that we have now will be lost, too much time would be taken up by these new systems and socialism would be lost. Remember though I’m talking years and years away here.

Look at the new Zelda game which is in development for Gamecube, as soon as Nintendo tried something new with the look which wasn’t making it look more ‘realistic’ a large number of die hard Zelda fans went in an uproar with moaning and complaining about the new look, all that and the rumours of the Zelda look we saw at Spaceworld making a comeback it looks as though realism is the way were going to be heading, I suppose the old saying is true then, no one likes change.

So could gaming become so revolutionary in the future that we would loose all sense of what is real, could it become too much of a part of life unlike the casual way we play it now?

Do you think games as a whole will be better once (if it ever happens) console technology can no longer be advanced and more attention it played to the games and the way they are played?

I didn't really mind about the new look Zelda. That's very probably because I can't stand Zelda games and don't give a toss what it looks like. :D

PS. Well done on your win mate!

That will never happen, It's like saying when will everything be invented? the answer is never, things are thought up all the time and improvements are constantly made. As for price, cheaper ways of manufacturing these machines is improved daily so it really is a fantastic world we live in.

congrats on the win, well derserved ;-)
