There are three main important factors I look for in a game, which are good graphics, good gameplay and a good lasting period. define it you say? Well, a good game should last at least two or three weeks, otherwise you can't help but feel frustrated. An everlasting game is something that cannot possibly be achieved by any developer, but that's not what I'm asking for!

Games are pretty dear nowadays considering how cheap they used to be, and the way I see it, if they are going to increase the price we should at least receive extra for our money. Fair enough, we are given revolutionary graphics, but we've also paid for a guarantee of that itself by paying for the console.

Why do so many developers spend so long making a game look good, rather than focusing on the more important things gamers expect from a game, like good gameplay and longevity. We want to play the game not sit there and admire it the whole time. I'm far from saying that games shouldn't have pleasing graphics, but what I am saying is that it seems like developers haven't got their priorities right by giving less for more.

I love when a new game gets you so involved that you start to like it and you always feel like coming back to it. Then, as you continue through various levels, still enjoying the game and still being pleased by it, you start to attract even more to it. Up to this point, everything is how it should be; that is until the game just stops. It just ends. And what's even worse is that it doesn't leave you with much else to do. A fine example of this sham is 'The Getaway'. This being a game long awaited and highly anticipated to be a blast, which it was, until it ended on such short notice. It didn't feel like the end was necessary because the plot was so good. The developers certainly created a fantastic plot, but unfortunately they didn't do it enough justice. Evidently, I could figure it out that they had spent most of their long time during production on delivering a good and detailed version of the city of London.

Now, don't get me wrong, they did a fantastic job of that and whilst doing the missions it gave a better experience, and the gameplay remained excellent, but once the game came to such a short notice end, there was nothing more to do in such a well displayed and presented venue. That is why most people would rate GTA: Vice City more than they would The Getaway, because the people at Rockstar created a vast city that had much more things to do even when you weren't doing the game's missions. And another thing you would notice in Vice City is that the graphics aren't too great, which obviously means the developers focused a lot more on delivering better gameplay than graphics itself. Anyone who's completely completed Vice City deserves some respect, but yet still the game gives you more things to do, that is why it's seen as the best game ever made.

This doesn't mean that all games should be exactly like Vice City because that obviously isn't healthy for today's environment, but what I'm trying to say is that developers need to try harder, even in the genres that don't leave room for much longevity. Sport for example. It isn't a genre for games that are expected to last very long, but one game proved that it can. Yes, Pro Evolution Soccer 2. Football games in the past have been inconsistent with good and bad game, and even with the number of good ones, they didn't have much that drew their owners to come back for seconds, except for the two-player sections which are always the most fun. But what Pro Evolution 2 does is worthy of respect. It delivers true authenticity to the sport (with exception to fake player and team names which can be changed) and in depth gameplay. It has so many cups, challenges and leagues to undergo that it is almost impossible to finish anytime soon. And what's more the gameplay is fantastic and incosistent, so every match you play you're guaranteed to witness something new. That is why I admire such a game.

Games like Pro Evo 2 and Vice City do things most games haven't been able to do. They give a decent amount of longevity as well as the acquired quality of graphics and gameplay. It is in the gameplay and longevity that gamers really care about, why do you think Nintendo have so many fans? Most of their games are in depth in gameplay and are really long. Despite the fact that most of their games are quite hard, they still remain longer than the average game to day.

Developers are doing a good job of creating games that look good and realistic and all that, but what they really need to focus on is the length of their games and how good they play. Like in adventure games, which should be long anyway, they should add little extra tasks and missions so the gamer can at least feel that that adventure game was worth getting. It doesn't seem fair when you have a game that's taken you through quite an involving adventure and then just stops, giving you nothing much more to do. It seems almost lazy on the developers' behalf. We need bags more for our money.

There's no doubt games will get longer in the near future, we're seeing signs of that already, but it's just a matter of patience on gamers' behalf. Games need to be longer, and developers need to recognise this.
