Although this isn't necissarily a bad thing, it has two alarming consequences.
Firstly, Hollywood isn't likely to make serious films that really touch on deep issues. For example, just recently I heard that one excellent screenplay was rejected because not enough people in the teenage market were aware that World War 2 had occurred. Since the film played deeply into the emotions of the soldier, and the history of the war, it was scrapped.
Not only this, but some film companies only make serious films as a "prestige" product- much like limmitted edition goods that no one buys. These filsm are often just books that have been translated for the big screen.
The second alarming problem with films is that low budget, well made films just aren't seen because they don't have the big advertising budget. They're even exploited in the case of Vanilla Sky- a remake of what is meant to be a far better Spanish film.

it's 100% true! So many AMERICAN teenagers didn't actually knnow enough about the history of the war. Think about it... the way they see it "the japs" attacked Pearl Harbour, the Americans destroyed them with a nuclear missile, and now the US rules the world.
