All this console wars nonsense would never have started if gamers didn't attract to just one gaming company. No one knows how fanboys began, but I have been one for about seven years all because of one console, the Playstation. Nintendo fans went their way, Sega fans went theirs and Microsoft didn't have any fans, until recently. But all this has not led to any good. It is healthy for the industry as it keeps the cash flow running, but on the whole it doesn't show good gaming morals.

Before I was cursed with the Sony spell, I was happily entertained by my Mega Drive and SNES for a very long and happy period. I wasn't particularly drawn to any main company, and I enjoyed travelling through different formats and finding out about them. But as soon as I layed eyes on Sony's Playstation, my whole life changed. No longer did I feel like I wanted to find out about other companies, all I wanted were Sony files. Sony this, Playstation that.

Gamers scattered to all three corners of the industry around this time and the fanboy era began, and for some reason Microsoft couldn’t attract any. Anyway, I thought everything was fine as I remained in denial and devoted to just one console, even when there were so many around. Everyday, I would find out something new about Sony and Playstation releases. My undivided attention was simply fixed. Every now and then I would stumble across to “the other side” and play something different, like I did with the Gameboy when I went on holiday with my cousins. It wasn’t mine but I seriously enjoyed playing Mario again, after such a long time away from my SNES.

But, it wasn’t long until I was grasped back into Sony’s arms. Around the time Gran Turismo arrived, my fanboyerism began to mutate, into something more violent, and for some reason I started competing for Sony. I always wanted to find out if they were doing better than Sega and Nintendo, and if they didn’t I wouldn’t feel very good about it. This was another form of influence that began from nothing. At school, I started aggrevating others with “Sony are the best” remarks to the Ninty and Sega bunch, and my gaming emotions were running haywire. At that point in time, gaming seemed to be like a non-physical war, but for what reason? I still found myself stumbling on my neighbours’ Gameboys every now and then because I just couldn’t refuse the opportunity of playing any game.

It felt as if every game that came out for the Playstation that I liked was just one more great distraction from the rest of the world. Then, one day, while at a friends, he suddenly announced that he had got an N64 and for that split second I felt like the proper gamer I used to be, who always enjoyed a new experience. I played and played and played on all of his games, and I couldn’t believe how fun and exciting they were, and it just got me thinking about the mass amount of other games I had missed out on. Goldeneye was superb, Mario Tennis was hugely enjoyable and so were the rest of the games. Nintendo weren’t so bad after all.

Because of this, my old gaming habits came back and I started caring about the whole of the industry again, rather than just one part of it. I played the Dreamcast, and what a fine console it seemed to be! Shenmue was stunning and Sega Rally wasn’t too bad, but my fire for Sony remained alight. And after everything looked to be back to normal, the highly anticipated (by me) PS2 came out. I was one of the lucky pre-orderers to receive my PS2 before its formal UK release and I was simply buzzing with PS2 flavourings. Like you do with almost every new thing you get, you start to admire it and want the best for it, and that was exactly my situation. I just had to know every single bit of detail about the console, and about its future. And once again, all concentration was heading Sony’s direction, this being the company I had never heard of before 1995, except for their electrical goods.

From the time of the PS2’s release till yesterday, I haven’t played any of the next-gen consoles. Moping about in the cave of neglect (my bedroom), it’s been PS2 and a bit of PC all the way. In fact, apart from PC gaming, my hands haven’t touched any other Microsoft product. But now I believe I have seen the light. I couldn’t coop myself up to just one gaming company at this time if I tried because the potential of consoles out there is amazing. I just had to check it out.

That is why yesterday, I got one of the biggest shocks ever! I had been invited to my cousins house for lunch, and it was only just after Christmas that he told me he and his brother had got a PS2 and GameCube for Christmas. I asked several questions about what games they had (as you do) and he seemed to have a pretty nifty collection for his Cube, but I knew barely nothing about the games he mentioned so I wasn’t as excited as I would normally be at the opportunity of playing something new. I got there, saw the Cube face-to-face for the first ever time with his collection and my jaw instantly dropped and my anticipation to play increased dramatically to say the least. I jumped at the pads (which were much more impressive than I thought with all the console wars nonsense) and chose Die Hard: Vendetta. Firstly, I couldn’t believe he had the game I wanted to play for quite a while and secondly I was impressed with Nintendo’s technology.

Debut to the disc world in gaming, you wouldn’t expect Nintendo to do such a thing, but their discs are slick and I think they’re much better than the usual sized ones! The console is beautifully compact and the discs appear cute, just begging you to put her in. After all this admiring, I played Vendetta and needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The action is fast, frantic and very tense and the graphics?…delightful! The controls were quite hard to adapt to, but I thought this was even better, because it adds even more of a challenge as well as more tension in the game.

Nintendo did well with their first impressions. Loading times were quick, graphics were excellent and the overall performance was flawless. After playing Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion and Rocky for the Cube I couldn’t believe such fun I had. Thinking about it now, I don’t think I even thought of my PS2 during my stay, but the game that rounds of my “shocking” experience had to be Mario Party 4. Oh, sweet Jesus!

Nintendo’s sweet and cuddly image sprung to mind before I inserted the disc, and it didn’t help the game‘s appeal much that my cousin (aged 10) kept urging me on to play it. I did anyway, just to see what it was like and all I can say is WOWEEEE!! It’s simply genius! You’re given a number of Mario Land characters to choose and you and lots of people can play. Cut a long story short, you choose your characters, choose the world in which you want to “Party” and then be amazed. For the rest of my very long stay at my cousins, I was on this game and I didn’t even get to play Harry Potter J The gameplay is simply brilliant!.. and did I mention very addictive. You are given plenty of different tasks to undergo and these are probably the most fun tasks I’ve ever encountered. It got me thinking how the hell the creators could think up so many ideas, and what good partnership developers Nintendo have. To round it
up, it’s a game that I thought would be absolute pants, but it ended up being one of the best games I’ve ever played. You seriously have to play it to rate it, especially if you think I’m talking total nonsense!

Well, my experience came to an unwanted end and I was left feeling many different emotions, mainly being angry. Angry that I had neglected other gaming stuff in the past and present, and because of the many things I missed out on as a result. Believe me, it doesn’t really pay to be a fanboy of just one gaming giant, but instead I’ve learnt to admire and appreciate all things gaming.

Nintendo seem like the real gaming gods at the moment, but even though I think this, Sony will always come first. Why you ask? Because they were the ones that really got me shook up and upbeat about gaming. It’s probably the same reason why all you other fanboys/girls out there would also put your favourite gaming company first. It’s no problem to like a particular gaming group more than the other, but console wars and all that rubbish isn’t really necessary. Dedicated fanboys should simply slip out the frenzy and admire all things gaming, otherwise you would seriously miss out on a hell of a lot, especially with technology advancing as rapidly as it is at the moment.

Thanks for reading

Valid points there Unbeliever but perseverence is the key.

I seriously did not believe that the GameCube was that good. I heard so much talk of it, but it all just went through one ear and out the other. I'm not really hyped up about playing an Xbox but who knows, I could be surprised by that as well.

Thanks for the reply by the way.

Of course, you're right. A true "gamer" in every sense of the word appreciates the best of everything. Limiting your thoughts and preferences to one specific console manafacturer is the equivalent of suicide. You'll never know what decent games exist out there because you'll be blinded by your own biased ignorance.

Your post should have been read by more people Dr Z but it seems that no-one discusses things in-depth anymore. All we have are loads of newbies and spammers waxing lyrical about things that are inconsequential.

If I've offended any regulars by that, then I'm sorry but I'm beginning to see why Insane Bartender left these forums.
