Just a quick topic- list your favourite 3 games designers in order, and say why you like their work. I'll go first:

1) Shigeru Miyamoto: After coming to Ninty as an artist, Shigsy suddenly became famous, or should that be infamous, when game took off. He made Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong, designed the first platformers and is still int he indiustry making groundbreaking games- Mario 64 introduced real 3D gameplay for the first time.

2) Yugi Naka: When the SNES was selling more than every other console put together (there were at least half a dozen at the time), Sega needed to do something. So, right then, Naka-san came up with the comlete opposite of Ninty's fat, slow, red plumber- Mario. He made a slick, fast, cool, blue hedgehog named Sonic! Oh, and NiGHTS! on the Saturn is, in my eyes, the most original game ever. Pure phantasy gameplay... genius. Fave game ever is that!

3) Yu Suzuki: The man of many talents. On the one hand he is pushing the boundries in 3D fighters with the Virtua Fighter series. On the other he is an expert at making racing games- Ferrari 355, and loads more that I can't remember (DOH!). Oh, and now he's made Shenmue!

Apart from those below, I think Valve are worth a mention for Half Life alone. Also Sid Meier....

Interesting...

Hideo Kojima is an obvious choice for anybody, not just for MGS.
Kazunori Yamauchi for the GT series is a favourite of mine too.
Was it Jason Rubin or something, that was president of Naughty Dog, and behind J and D.
Pretty much anybody at squaresoft. I`ll have to watch the credits again to find out who the head dude is though.

Actually, Wookie, I was not trying to be provocative...

Granted, I could have put it in the FOG room- I may go and do that now... however, at the time I'd posted about 4 topics there already...

Ok, so I names 2 Sega developers, and 1 ninty... but Sega are MULTIFORMAT now- Naka is GC orientated, and Suzuki is PS2 orientated...

But that's of no consequence- i just picked my fave, designers... whether they work for company A or B is besides the point.. my next fave designer would have been Peter Molyneux

1. Anyone who
2. makes a
3. decent game.

A little provocative, isn't it? Posting this in the Sony forum, and naming Nintendo/Sega developers. More of a topic for the FoG Prime/chat... and I notice it hasn't appeared there, or in any of the other console-specific forums either. Wouldn't be looking for an argument, would we? :-)

I think this is a major difference between Sega/Nintendo fans and PlayStation (and probably Xbox) fans - we don't ally ourselves to particular people.

Ask any Sega/Nintendo fan this question, and they usually always respond with the names you've mentioned, or occasionally a few others. But the list seems fairly small, and the impression always seems to be given that everything these people touch is gold. (Which may or may not be the case, but either way, it's irrelevant to this particular post.)

On the other hand, PlayStation owners (and as I said, quite possibly Xbox owners in the future) tend to name companies, rather than individuals.

Whether this is because, recently, Sega and Nintendo platforms have had a rather limited number of developers or not, I don't know - but it does seem to be the way things are.

If I were to name people, they would be Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil), Kazunori Yamauchi (Gran Turismo) and of course Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear). For me personally, the titles these people have so far produced have all been top-quality entertainment - each topping their particular genre by miles, across all platforms.

However, I would never buy a game *simply* because it was created by these people.

But generally, in terms of 'developers' I would have to name companies, not individuals - as I suspect would most PlayStation owners.

You ask for three, but I couldn't limit it that much.

Sony themselves; Polyphony Digital; Konami; Capcom (have given us good games, even with the lousy PAL conversions); Core Design; Electronic Arts; Rockstar; Reflections; Namco; 989 Studios... and more besides.

PlayStation owners have been spoiled for choice with good developers for a long time now. With many (but not all) of these top companies returning to multi-platform development, it can only be good for the industry- not to mention broadening the horizons (and developer lists) of Nintendo and Sega fans.

(no order)

Shinji Mikami- the resi man himself, The original resident evil was an experience that i could never forget, Since then I've enjoyed game after game in the series and count the days until the gamecube releases.

Takayosha Sato (Team Silent)- Silent Hill was the most frightning game I've ever played and the sequel is a masterpiece, I was a bit puzzled why they took the most frightning thing out which is the switching of the normal places to a strange place but either way scary stuff and damn right brilliant ;-)

Shigero Miyamoto- has to be. The Mario Bros entertained me and sister for many many years along with the mega man games and although i haven't seen much of his work on the N64 the gamecube will surely make up for this.
