Online gaming, Everyone’s heard of it but are consoles actually ready for it? PC gaming has been running for years with its major ups and downs, but what makes console gaming different? Well for a start you don't need to worry about hardware specifications and other confusing hickery-pickery you associate with PC games. As we all know, Technology progresses over time and this year "The Big Three" are taking their respective machines into the world of online gaming.

Nowadays gaming is accepted as a normal way of life, just like watching porn. I mean, erm movies! In fact, I reckon you'll find at least one console in every house in the UK. This "acceptance" of gaming has allowed console developers to grow and even Microsoft are taking a piece of gaming pie. People knew from the start of the Playstation 2's development that Sony would be taking it into the future, Online Gaming.

Sony made it clear to the world that online gaming would be one of the Playstation 2's meaty highlights, and would be released on the launch of the PS2, They lied. Only in August 2002 was PS2 online launched in the USA, But carried many horror stories to people who purchased it, Things like having to screw the modem into the expansion port becoming very difficult, and many people damaging their Playstation 2's in the process. Also, As far as I know Sony online doesn’t have a yearly subscription fee, Great! I hear you say, but there is a snag. Most of the games going online require a monthly/yearly subscription to play the game. Now in my opinion that’s daylight robbery. One of the greatest advantages about this online service is you can connect to it through broadband or 56k, Although Lag still is a major issue. Is there any sign of PS2 online being released in the UK? Not much information, But I reckon it'll be released in late 2003.

Microsoft on the other hand, The "Newbies" (Notice I used an online gaming phrase! Haha!) Of the console industry introduced the world to the Xbox, many people speculated its failure but it’s climbing that long ladder quite strongly. The Xbox was destined to go online from the start of its life and many people know Microsoft know what they are doing when it comes to the Internet and computer technology. Surprisingly, "Xbox Live" was released in the USA on November the 15th 2002, The 1 year anniversary of the Xbox, Those lard-eating yanks have warmed to it well due to the fact that Microsoft have released such a well constructed service, And many Xbox Live games are in development or have already been released with good reception. The package comes with 2 free games, A Communicator headset and a 1-year subscription to the service. But this great sounding service has major down points to it, Xbox Live can only be connected through Broadband and many people in the United Kingdom are unfortunate not to have access to cable or ADSL, rendering the service to only a small percentage of the Xbox population. Of course, In America nearly every home has access to Broadband easily, Microsoft being an American based company didn’t think about poor old UK. Fortunalty the Xbox has well established itself as a great offline platform.

Now, Nintendo the magicians of the gaming industry released the excellent Gamecube console back in May. Everyone knows the quality Nintendo can produce, Games such as Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime come to mind. One thing though, Nintendo has never really had any intentions for the console to go online, although they say they hope to bring it into the future very soon. Now this scarce information may seem limited and Nintendo are reluctant to release any information. Nintendo fans (like me) either want the Gamecube to go online or don’t. In my opinion, The Gamecube doesn’t need to; it’s a very well established offline platform and boasts many original titles that everyone should own.

So in my opinion, Even though Microsoft and Sony have 2 great services coming our way, Online gaming just isn’t ready for consoles. Consoles have always been great for single player and multiplayer for people in the same room. Like I say, Lag is an issue which affects online games, I think industry should of waited until the future, When everyone has fast Internet connections and we can all enjoy online gaming.

Consoles are ready to go online, but not EVERY console user... not yet.

Anyway, it was never going to happen in one fell swoop.
Sure, you have to be reasonably PC-knowhow to get XBlive going but it was always going to start with enthusiastic techy pioneers.

Xbox live and PS2 online is just the first step.
Xbox2 and PS3 will be easier to access, standard from the word go and easier for people to set up. What's more, more people will have broadband which will likely be cheaper too.

It has to start somewhere and it did with the Dreamcast.
The loose modem add on dial up had slight flaws but showed promise for the future.

And that future is slowly edging towards us.

I think Nintendo should go online.

Purely because it would stop idiots claiming it is a complete failure without online functions

Yeah they would be great fun, But I still think Nintendo should keep the console offline, Its already well established itself with its "big hitters" like Metroid and Mario Sunshine.
