There's nothing like a good old classic game of Mario Bros.! But the trouble now is just finding a NES and a copy of this game, and you're very lucky if you have one! Sure, you can play it on the SNES but it just isn't quite the same. I preffered the old SFX, and the original look added to the classical feel! Even if it looked poor. You could also say this about many other games on many other formats. Dating back to the days of the Jaguar and Spectrum! With the next-generation of gaming ready to take off over here, do we need a 'flashback from the past' to remind us of what true gaming is all about???

Nowadays people seem to take some games for granted, and just go for the ones with best graphics, or the price that stands out from the rest. But back in the day of 16-bit machines there wasn't much competition for 'best graphics', as we seemed to buy games for the sheer fun and enjoyment! I think that newer gamers need to realise this soon, otherwise great games could be neglected by many!

My idea is to release sets of discs for each console, and each disc would contain one or more of the classic games from the past, that you cannot find anywhere, anymore. Games like the 'Mario Bros.' series in their NES original form could appear on one disc, the early 'Zelda' series on another, to remind people of how it all started, or maybe even classics like 'Day of the Tentacle' and 'Sam & Max'...

Games like these would not only remind people of the meaning behind 'true, classic gaming', but also offer the oppourtunity of a sequel, or late addition to these retro classics.

Another idea would be to have discs consisting of games by only certian developers. You could have a 'Capcom' disc of the 'Street Fighter' games, or a 'Rareware' disc of games like 'Killer Instinct' on the SNES, or maybe even a Sega disc of all the great Sonic games that only ever appeared on the GameGear... There could be many posibillities, and the chance for these developers to cash in on 'the old stuff'!

Excitebike 64 is a great game for it's longevity. Earn high enough rankings in the races and you can unlock new and different modes for playing. One mode to be unlocked is the classic NES version of this game. You can play it in exactly the same way, with the same controls. This would be the main way of playing 'Retro Game Discs', but you wouldn't have to unlock it. Another mode in Excitebike 64 is Excite 3D, which is basically the classic NES version, with updated graphics and controls. I think that this is a brilliant idea for expanding the longevity, and would definitley be considered for Retro Discs! Maybe...if you complete the game in 'Retro Mode' you can then play it through again in a '3D/Updated' version, where the controls and game are slightly different, even if the main game remains the same.

A similar thing like this has happened between 'Mario Bros.' and 'The Lost Levels', on the SNES.

So this is my idea for Retro Game Discs that could be released on all 3 of the next-gen. consoles. I think that it would be a big success, and give gamers even more of an option of what games to buy. They would also make a good choice for people who prefer the classics and only want to relieve those experiences, and nothing new! I also think they'd be fairly priced, at least a tenner less than the modern games.

Thanks for all that info. guys. So if Sega and Atari and co. have already done it, should it be considered for the GameCube?? After all, you could fit LOADS on a 1.5gb disc! And what do you think of my idea of 2 modes; one retro, one more 3D/modernised?? Like the Excitebike mode.

Sega did this... I've forgotten the name of the collection of games, but it was a load of Mega Drive titles, and 2 Saturn ones...

Which were actually some very obscure games. The Saturn games SHOULD have certainly been something like Panzer Dragoon and NiGHTS!- 2 absolutely classsic games that sell for hundreds in some auctions today. As for the Mega Drive games, games like Sonic should have been there.

To the best of my knowledge none of the above games was on these disc... a completely stupid idea!

Sam & Max and Day of the Tentacle are doing the rounds at the moment on a compilation disc featuring the two pointy clicky games.

Namco/Atari et al have already done this for the PSX and PC, but the problem is that they haven't focused on the right games. Capcom created a Playstation disc of 6 classic games (which I think you can now get on budget) which was very nice.
