The 'extreme sports' genre now seems to be going through the stages of evolution, to bring us some quite different games. Whilst Dave Mirra and Tony Hawk will keep on doing their standard tricks, and the games will all be in a similar vein, other titles are going for something else.
Dark Summit is a snowboarding adventure, Toxic Grind is a BMX adventure. So that's mission based boarding, or BMXing?
It's certainly an interesting concept. From what I've seen of Dark Summit there's still plenty of slope action, but rather than performing tricks on the way down you'll be escaping from the ski-patrol, or usning tricks to get into new areas.
The clips that I saw of Toxic Grind had the player riding between lasers. On a BMX.
I'm not sure that a BMX is the chosen form of transport for your average action hero. The BMX Bandits used them, but they were hardly heroes!
Still, it's nice to see original ideas, and concepts taken on to a new level.
Past experience of cross-over games has been a mixed bag. Michael Jordan in the Windy City, had you platforming, and using a basketball as a weapon. It never had much appeal!
Sonic
Sounds like one of them things which could be really good but, at the same time, could be utter poop if they design it wrong!
