Loyalty in gaming - do we still have this? Are you a PS2 devotee or a Sega fanatic, or are you one of those who've been drooling over the X Box magazine in anticipation for that Microsoft console to be released? Or do you care anymore? In the past, I know it may have been said, but around 10 years ago there was only really Sega and Nintendo. This was the time when console gaming really began to get 'cool' with Mario and Sonic battling it out for 8 and 16bit supremecy on their respective consoles. You knew what Mario stood for, and you knew where a Mario game cartridge went. The consoles were something else, they were loved and adored (some still are) and you'd never have even began to think or even care that someday Sonic could be on a Nintendo machine.
Well now, it's happened. With the evolution of Sega, we have seen some of their titles being released on a format other than their own. A few years ago, the prospect of Virtua Fighter going head to head with Tekken under the same conditions was but a mere pipe dream, yet now, it's a certainty! Even though some game developers still choose to agree to exclusive deals, such as Nintendo's little goldmine in getting the Resident Evil Series secured on the GameCube, we are still able to play the same game, with different control pads. And that is a fantastic thing indeed. It means there's more freedom for the gamer, and more competition in the market.
Yet, Nintendo, Sony and Nintendo will do everything in their power to make you choose their baby in exchange for your cash and your loyalty. So who to choose? I'm not special, I'm no different from several million people out there - I'm 100% satisfied with Sony, the PS2 was a huge advance on their last console, and it hasn't let me down in any way, & yes, I imagine I will be getting more and more games for it, should they catch my mind's excitement spot, yet, there's something inside of me that's been saying "fank u" for a good few days now, can you guess what it is yet?
I wanna Mario game-a! Sony's console may well have a decent selection of games available, but underneath all the packaging, behind that sassy PS2 logo, you know there's a pride of Sony execs in their Armani suites, drinking capuccino's - and you just know that they don't really care an awful lot about games, about having fun in front of a regular 21 inch television on your favorite arm chair while your mates gather round on the floor as you take each other on in a bout of Mario Kart on your 'ancient' Snes. Whereas Nintendo?
Sony - Walkman, Discman, Hifi's, PlayStation. You know they're a company to trust but with Nintendo they're a company to be inspired by! So the Nintendo 64 didn't sell as well as the PlayStation - niether did the Ford Focus...(and in any case, you only need one console who cares if you're grandad's got one or not?)
Nintendo are fun - I remember those television adverts with the large globe and Nintendo lighting it up - with Mario as their mascot - who would have thought that a plump Italian plumber could be such a great leader? I've known the magic in the past, I've played on such brilliance as Mario Kart, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Mario Bros on the original NES, Battle Toads et al - great fun, purely fantastic games!!! So I'm going to get a GameCube. Sega perhaps make some even crazier games than Nintendo, and they're nearly always worth a play - with Sonic Team ' diggin' ' da 'Cube, I really will have to book May the 3rd off work!
The GameCube - so it's got a name, one that at first sounded stupid, but is now part of every day discussion, a Cube for Games - simple! It doesn't have DVD playback, but then I have my PS2 for that, but it will have Internet capabilities in the future, it does have 4 control ports - all night gaming is sure to get more competitive! It's got a graphics chip called the Gekko - now in my book, that's impressive - there won't be any piracy problems thanks to the optical disc technology - yes disc! Nintendo have finally done away with cartridges (aside from on their GBA) and to be honest, I can't wait for the 3rd of May, although in the mean time I do have the PS2 to entertain me, which it does - I am still loyal Sony, but I think I need some more fun!!!
GameCube will also be a mere £150 at launch! Thank you Nintendo.
Another excellent feature are the wireless pads, now my family won't have an excuse when they fall over into the dining room - oh and you can use the GBA's as controllers for it too.
Speaking of which - the Game Boy Advance is about to go down in price - to an expected £60 - can't say fairer than that!!!
Cheers

But I've kind of been faithful to the Dreamcast before that - I had a fantastic collection that I was proud of, games on the shelf in alphabetical order because they deserved to be :)
But then it kind of stopped being produced and I got a PS2. Being faithful to a games firm isn't that common nowadays. Dringo is a pure blood Ninty, and maybe he's comfortable with that, but I'm glad that you've taken the decision to get a different console as well as your PS2 - because you could be missing out on a lot.
I'll just give it a go;
Being faithful to a console. You find many people on the site who are, as you say - faithful. They only believe in one console, one god, one leader. Turbonutter and Dringo are prime examples of this and I honestly believe that if say Nintendo were giving away their console for free, then they'd still not purchase it.
With the Nintendo, you have Mario. Sega (although dead in the console genre) have Sonic. Sony have nothing. They don't have this fictional character for people to relate to. Perhaps a good idea? You think Nintendo, the image of Mario comes to mind. You think of Sony and some might say Crash Bandicoot, or others may think or the first game they bought or the best game it has to offer.
Nice post there.
