When you turn on a game for the first time, what do you expect? Action that puts you in the front-seat of the game? Epic storylines? Dramatic scenes of phantasy worlds?

What people don't expect is a boring, mundane "training level" developed to get you used to the controls of thr game. Not only is it just plain dull, but like the title says: first impressions count.

I once read a games reviewer write that he based much of his impression of a game on the first few levels. Whether you agree with his critical reviewing method, I bet most of you will agree with it.

So, why is it that so many games do start with a slowly paced level that's nothing like the actual style of the game? Far better, in my opinion, would be to put the player in the heat of the action- maybe with a few on screen prompts to indicate controls, but no more. If the player wants to develop their skills, and be taught how to play rather than learn it themselves, then you could include a training mode- something that games like Lylat Wars have done in the past.

Advance wars has about 2 hours worth of training levels before actually starting the proper game; but they are really fun and HAVE to be there in order to know how to play the game.

I know that cutscenes aren't the idea of the topic but they bear relevance atleast.
When you first boot up a game, you're first presented with a cutscene.

Majoras Mask had a pretty long, drawn out and boring beginning which left me with a bad impression.
Once I got into it (after about an hour's play...), however, it turned out to be one of the best games I'd played in a long time.

On Perfect Dark, the cutscene is there if you'd rather get into the storyline, but you can skip it if you just want to get straight into the action!

If you're really interested in cutscenes, I have a separate topic on them!

If you had a topic called "I like the PS2" I wouldn't talk about PS2 mouse ports now, would I!

When I but games I usually go by what the box says.

Or if my friends reccomended it.

I agree with sonic, first impressions always count!

It sort of led onto them.

First impressions might be damaged by having to sit through some long cut scene when you really want to play the damn game.

I think that cutscenes should be strictly optional.

Like on Perfect Dark.

I say never start with a long cut-scene. I prefer to pick up the story as I go along.

If you get the story AFTER controllig your character for a while (even just a couple of minutes) the story will have a greater impact.
