Some successful sequels are titles like Metal Gear Solid 2. Now MGS was the biggest PlayStation title, without a doubt. When we all heard about MGS2, the forums were sprouting with posts about what MGS2 would be like, and how good the game would be. Now when the game finally arrived, I played it and completed it in a small amount of time. I didn’t like the fact that such a hyped game had disappointed me, but I couldn’t say that the game wasn’t great. Thinking about it now, I can’t really see how Konami could have made a flop in the series. MGS had given Konami everything they could have wished for when making MGS2, great characters, a superb storyline and masses of fans. Now MGS2 was so successful, almost everybody I knew had the game, whether they had a PS2 when the game was released or not.
Now every so often, a new developer comes along and astonishes us with a brilliant title. Now Jak and Daxter is this astonishing title, but we are yet to see another release in this series. Jak and Daxter: The Precursors Legacy. It’s a title with a double-barrelled kind of name; it’s a name that means there’s going to be another release in the series. But we still haven’t seen this release, and the reason may be this. The game was great, it was great from beginning to middle, but not to end. The ending was too open, it didn’t hint on anything that could be made. The storyline in the first game was too original to lead onto anything else, which is a huge shame. I would like for a new Jak and Daxter title to be released, but if it means that the series is ruined, I would rather there wasn’t a new title to come along.
Now The Sims was good, and the expansion packs were good, but they weren’t anything special. Now The Sims is coming to the PlayStation 2, I think we can expect to see quite a few expansion packs in the upcoming years. But they really don’t offer that much that changes the game. If all expansion packs are like The Sims’ PC ones, I’d rather see sequels than add-ons. Plus, now they’re on the PS2’s discs, they’re going to cost more to buy as well. Hopefully this pricing will make them slow down the release of them, but I doubt they’ll ever stop making them until computer games come to a stop.
Now if expansion packs are good, then I agree that they should keep coming. But Team Soho announced that they were making an expansion pack to The Getaway, and that was before The Getaway was even released. Now The Getaway was going to be original, but then the GTA series became 3D. So this was hard to overcome for The Getaway boys, but then they realised that their game was going to be very similar to the GTA games. Now if this expansion pack is going to be released, it’s going to have to be special to become successful in the gaming world. I mean, The Getaway was just good enough to be “new” in our world, but another release that is like something that only scraped by is going to have to be damn good to be successful.
I’m all for originals if I’m honest, there’s nothing more that I like to seen than an original game that is “good”. But if expansion packs do become better than what they are, I won’t mind seeing them on the shelves either.
