For those of you who haven't heard of the film, it features Jack Black (High Fidelity) in his first lead role, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow.
The story (loosely) is that Black is a very shallow man named Hal (don't know how they got the title of the film, must be cryptic or something) who judges all girls simply on looks. The problem is that his standards are impossibly high, and, well Hal isn't the best of lookers!
Anyway, he meets a self-help guru, Tony Robbins, who hypnotises Hal into only seeing the "inner-beauty" in women. This immediately leads Hal to start hitting on women who are some-what below his previous standards. Much to the bewilderment of his friend, Mauricio!
Hal then meets Paltrow and falls in love. But he can't quite understand how such a "stunner" can be intelligent, funny and nice.
The story moves along at quite a good pace, and there are enough cringe inducing and funny moments to keep the audiences attention. Of course, it is still a romantic comedy and don't go in expecting the quality of 4 Weddings or High Fidelity. It is a good film, nothing really more. The ending is obvious, although there is a good attempt at a twist.
Black does well, but I'm not sure he is a natural lead, Paltrow is excellent. If you want a gentle laugh go see this film, but don't expect a work of genius.
