Final Fantasy X, Tekken 4, WWE Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth. Can anyone spot the connection?

Yes, I know they're all great games, but they also share one other connection. They're all sequels. It seems now that all great games are sequels of other great games, and games companies seem to be relying on the success of the previous games in order to sell more. It seems to me that new game ideas are becoming more of a rare species.

I myself am falling into the trap of going for sequels of games taht i know are good. I need to be brought out of this trap. I need to rent more, try before I buy and all that. I don't own a single PS2 game that isn't a sequel (I only have seven games mind you).

What I want to know is does anyone feel the same way? Is there anyone who is eager to experiment? Does anyone else think games companies rely on sequels more than new ideas? And has anyone played The Getaway because that looks very good and I'm very curious?

I await responses

I think that alot of people would rather play an origional title rather than a sequel, but it's alot easier to make another game in a budding series rather than making a game and a whole new series from scratch. making the first game in a possible series has got to be one hell of a hrad thing to do, seeing as you've got to think about the storyline and characters. But if there has already been a release in a series, then you can build on the storyline and develop your characters further in a new game.

New games are also hard to come by becuase it is hard to think of an original idea for a game, seeing as alot of them have been taken. And, there are only so many "succesful" genres of games out there. Alot of successful companies have tried to make a good tennis game, and how many have succeeded? About 2.

New and origional games also come from new and upcoming companies, and these companies are finding it very hard to get their ideas into actual games. The new companies usually come along with good ideas, but are turned away. The companies that get taken on are companies with games that are in the FPS and RPG genre, because the manufacturer knows that these are he most succesful genres out there.

Even if a new games maker comes along with a new idea and is accepted, they don't always get the full backing by the developers. So although the game could of ended up being a huge success, it may have flopped because of the lack of money put into the game or the lack of advertising.

But there are many games that have come along from new games companies and have been a success. New and origional ideas have worked, and i hope that alot of new games do come along. Jak and Daxter was a very origional game, and became successful because it was backed all the way. Sony advertised this game alot, and it turned out to be one hell of a release.

Sequels will keep on coming, but that's because alot of people really get into a series. The Final Fantasy series is planning to releases their 12th title in the series, now the series is so successful that they can still do this and succeed. If people get into a series and enjoy the characters and the storylines that the creators are thinking up, they will keep on buying the releases.
