Considering that New Zealand is on the other side of the earth (And more cumbersome in travel) for many of the actors of the film trilogy, I thought atleast that Ireland and even parts of Scotland and England would have been ideal for the filming of the Tolkien Epic.
The beautiful locations of my own Country (Ireland) without being biased would have been ideal( I can give many locations), or atleast England and Scotland.
I wouldn't even have ruled out either the quaint setting of an English village or surrounding area for the settings of Hobbiton of the movie either.
You see thats the thing, the Three countries are so packed together, providing ideal locations, backdrops and settings that would have been more appropiate, if you include traveling costs and other spendings.
I know of many areas of Ireland atleast of my own Country which I have visited many times which I thought-'Wow, wouldn't that have been great in the LotR Movies!'
Ideal locations which in turn that have been involved in many famous Irish myths that have been quite simillar to Tolkien Myths.
Many Areas and tales of Ancient Irish provinces/Kingdoms of Ulster, Munster Leinster and Connaught even, have their own stories to tell, which reading through them, you'd almost think they where out of a passage from J.R.R Tolkien's 'the Simarallion'.
Not only for the splendour of the locations, but for the history attached as well which is so familiar to the tales of Middle Earth,-Thats how much I think Peter Jacksons Three fold epic would have been Ideal for filming in Ireland;
Lets not forget about Scotland and England Either, with its Beautiful backdrops and scenery and including rural English locations aswell.
As for Ireland not only would you have had brillaint backdrops on par with New Zealand and better, but it would have been relatively low in costs as well.
Braveheart for instance and even Saving Private Ryan where filmed largely on location in Ireland due to its low costs in filming and world beating locations and scenery; and considering the cost of travel for many of of the actors, i would have felt that Ireland would have been a prime location, being so close to other countries such as England and Scotland (Let alone closer for American Acrors too). And we can't forget about scenic Wales either.
But its all gone amiss now, the trilogy has been already filmed with spectacular results and I really can't complain.
New Zealand is gobsmacking, rivalling even Ireland, but you can't help but feel it was an opportunity gone amiss for Peter Jackson.
Here's to the production of the Hobbit then, thoughts of the 'Tolkien' Iron hills glinting in the sun, It's got me thinking again-... Let's hope they go for somewhere familiar!.
> Cardiff.
"We seek the one ring."
"What's that but? You
> seek what now?"
Think you need to go a bit deeper into the valleys for that kinda speak.
*cardiffian feathers ruffled*
"We seek the Ring"
"You wot? I'll smash your face in mate"
"No, the ring"
"Oh. Try Poundland, there's fousands in there. I stole most of them and sold them for gear."
"We seek the one ring."
"What's that but? You seek what now?"
And the landscapes are awe inspiring.
Perfect setting
