"To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous Sony Marketing, or to take arms against a sea of Segas, and by opposing end them? To die: to sleep; no more; and by a sleep to say we end the heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to from a faulty X-Box, 'tis a consummation devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep; to sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; for in that sleep of death what dreams of Billy Gates may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give us pause: there's the respect that makes calamity of so long life; For who would bear the whips and scorns of Sony, the oppressor's wrong, the pangs of despised love, the law's delay, the insolence of Nintendo and the spurns that patient merit of the pre-ordering unworthy gamer takes."

Quoted by Billy Shakespeare as he was standing outside Electronics Boutique one Christmas whilst awaiting his pre-ordered console. You see, chaps, even in Elizabethan times they still had these problems with consoles, so what's new?

"Everyone's stealing from someone..."

It would be pretty hard to make a game that had NO similarities to any other that has ever been made. And originality for originality's sake might take away from the quality of the game - look at the idea for the Shakespeare game in these very forums, totally original, yes, but where is the addictive gameplay coming from? (Mind you, my beard styling section would probably have them coming back...)

Obviously there is a first for everything, but you only get a first once, and most of the ones worth doing have been done I suspect.

If anyone has ever played a game that they thought was ENTIRELY original at the time, let's hear it.

What about a game where you "win" by "losing". Hmmm, might be pretty easy....

OK, I admit that this could well have been extracted from Francis Bacon, maybe Shakespeare heard him mumbling the same thing in the queue for his console. Which brings us on to the topic of plagiarism (copying another person's work for profit).

How many games titles out there include bits and pieces from other games. Look at Tomb Raider and Excalibur 2555AD for example, practically the same. And Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, and Metal Gear and Goldeneye, and Rainbow Six and Quake, and Mario Kart and Muppet Racers, and Destruction Derby and TOCA.....I could go on, but all of these games seem to have certain elements that were blatantly copied from other games. If I spend 30 or 40 quid on a new game I want originality, not more of the same. In the future, what are the chances of picking up a brand new game which has totally original gameplay?

P.S. If Shakespeare was a gamer, what games would he like to play?
