Doshin The Giant Preview
Doshin the Giant was originally a game for the… well, ‘console that never was’, the 64DD. When I heard of Doshin for the first time I thought “Oh no, another game that isn’t worth making, this happens on all consoles when they first come out, loads of pointless games” But ohhhhhh, I was so wrong. When I saw the pictures of this ‘off the wall’ game I really started to get into the idea of controlling a 70foot giant walk around an Island helping natives and then thinking “Time for some fun!” and destroy everything that you’ve just worked so hard on. So, before you give up on this game because you haven’t heard of it, take a look.
Doshin the Giant is a one-player adventure game, released TBC. It was published by Nintendo, developed by Param and designed by a man named Kazutoshi Iida who quotes “This is based on human behaviour. Look at children, for example. Kids like to build stuff with wood blocks, but a moment later, they will destroy their creation.”
There has only been one screenshot of the actual in game graphics and trust me this is very disappointing. I know it’s not properly developed yet but these graphics really aren’t pushing Gamecube to its limits. The graphics are grainy and lack the realism that most next generation consoles have, Luigi’s Mansion has brilliant lightning strikes, Galleon has superb character graphics but Doshin could be mistaken for an N64 game or in some dire cases a Playstation game. As I’ve already said this game isn’t complete yet so lets hope Param will improve this before the release date of Doshins quest. Although it has poor quality graphics remember this is only one, under-developed, screenshot, hopefully the more screenshots we will be able to see the progress of this future Gamecube release.
The thing about Doshin the Giant is it’s a totally new look at gaming, because instead of following tasks on one line, you can choose what you want to do, like the ‘daddy, chips?’ advert, all day you’ll be wondering ‘Destruction, peace?’ Do you want to help the natives get water and food or do you want break stuff, kill stuff and destroy stuff. When you are yellow Doshin, (Peaceful Doshin) the natives of the Island ask you to do tasks for them, such as, if they want to build new villages and the land is lumpy Doshin will flatten it by pounding the ground. If you succeed in your task you will be rewarded with a heart, and the more hearts you get the bigger you get, even though you can do more whilst you’re big there is more chance you will destroy things and end up killing some of the natives.
I’m still wondering about if this game can last as long as it is. Reasons for it not lasting very long would probably be the repetition of the game, do something for the natives, get a prize, do something else for the natives, get a prize, ect. BUT, and a very big but, if these task’s are varied enough by Param this should last for ages and if you do get bored helping the natives, turn red and kill them all, destroy all your work and well, have some fun. Destruction is the new nirvana of the gaming world.
Doshin the Giant has a lot of development to be done to it if it wants to be a Gamecube classic, but if the game isn’t too repetitive and the graphics get improved it could be a future classic. So if you like helping people, getting annoyed and killing a whole population, it’s looks like you’ve found your game. So far there hasn’t been much of an improvement to the 64DD version, if Param can figure out what was wrong with the 64DD version of the game it could help the development greatly and have our next Mario or Zelda, but only 50times bigger and a bit more along the lines of “My skin colour is red and yellow”
Anticipation 3/5
Luigi’s Mansion Preview
When I first heard of Luigi’s Mansion, to be perfectly honest, I thought it was going to be a corny, stupid game, which would be advertised by the Ghostbuster’s slogan “Who ya gonna call? Lu-igi!” But after I saw the Luigi’s Mansion video clips from Space World, I promptly changed my mind about this game.
The video clip really showed off Luigi’s Mansion’s graphics, including the amazing lightning blasts. The sound effects were really funny as Luigi cried out for his brother and the whistling in the wind.
The brilliant thing about the graphics in Luigi’s Mansion is that all the graphics are basically the same, both while playing and through cut scenes. The characters look great, as the cartooned Luigi moves you can see him chattering in fear as his nose wobbles around and his cold breath can be seen in the air as it leaves Luigi’s mouth. Nintendo have made a great use of shadows and lights in this game, especially when lightning flashes and Luigi’s shadow suddenly appears behind him. The ghost’s look amazing, because when they move around the house you can partially see through them but you can still see a vague picture of the background and when lightning strikes they disappear in a flash and the reflections in the mirror are brilliant, this game really shows off the power of the GameCube as the graphics aren’t just straight lines or grainy, there really crisp clear graphics.
Luigi’s Mansion, even though it may sound a bit stupid at first, is a very original game, it’s one of the first, if not the first, Spook ‘em up game. The reason why it’s such an original game is that it’s a bit of a mix between the fishing on Ocarina of Time for the N64, whilst catching ghost’s and amazing kind of puzzles from the Banjo series. Luigi’s Mansion’s such a new and different kind of game, which seems like it will be a totally new experience, which is what I look for in a new title.
The one thing I worried about this game when I first heard of it was the lastability. I really didn’t think that walking around, catching ghosts, would last, it might get repetitive. But when you see some of the puzzles in this game it’s easy to see that it will last a while. If the playability isn’t too repetitive this game should last quite a while because there seems to be a lot of puzzles and things to do, but it won’t last if it’s not playable. I personally think that it will be very playable because looking at the Mario’s (Mario’s and Luigi’s last name) past, all his games have lasted for ages like Mario 64 and Mario All Stars.
Compared to Mario 64, Luigi’s Mansion is a 3D game but set out as a 2D game. This is a totally new way to set out a game, there’s only one camera angle like a 2D, but it has 3D graphics. I think that this could be the future of Adventure games. I prefer the idea to Mario 64’s because it’s never been done before and seems like a funny new test to see Nintendo’s ability to make any kind of game a classic. I’m glad it’s not like all the other Mario games that have come out, the way it’s set out seems to be a bit like both Mario games for the N64. The classic Mario 64’s cartooned graphics but set out like the 2D Paper Mario.
It came out 14th September in Japan, coming out 18th of November in the US and will hit the UK in March 2002 as a launch title for the GameCube. Published and developed by Nintendo this 1 player Adventure should be a classic Mario game and an ace launch title.
If I had to give it a mark of how much I’m waiting for this to come out, 5/5
