The "Freeola Customer Forum" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
I've been experimenting with Google CSE (Custom Search Engine).
What do you think?
Try searching for GAD winners or webmaster winners or your username etc. to find one of your previous posts - seems to be working...
...Ads are now sometimes displayed above the results rather than just on the right as I previously had things - it doesn't look as if this can be changed...
Boxing Day - just having a break from 'Christmas' for a Freeola visit :¬)
I thought this was worth an update as the thread seems quite popular.
Quite a few people (not just me!) complained about their Google CSE now showing ads above the results and Google responded:
"For a quick workaround to minimize the impact, we reduced the number of top ads to 1..."
Not as good as before the new *Elements* but definitely an improvement :¬)

EDIT
Freeola's own forum search is now available.
--------------------------------------
I thought I would update this ancient thread as things have changed!
For those out there that use Google's CSE (Custom Search Engine) you should be aware that this has now been changed to Google CSE Custom Search Element !
Google's CSE info page: www.google.com/cse
The changes have been going on for a few months and it looks like a final 'transition' (as Google called it) was carried out on the 10th Nov.
Where Google have 'transitioned' my cobbled up code it means I shouldn't have had to change anything. But for the code I was using it changed a few things.
Ads are now sometimes displayed above the results rather than just on the right as I previously had things - it doesn't look as if this can be changed.
I also use an option to allow a normal 'web' search rather than a site search - this was broken for me. As I set this up around 4 years ago I'm a bit hazy on how I did things! I think I was using a '!' character as a prefix to the Custom Search ID to force a web search.
I fixed this by following these Google instructions and replacing my Google Custom Search ID with the newly generated one - without using the '!' prefix.
The new 'Element' has also messed up some of my page layout.
As I using the legacy code I'll probably look at moving to the new format at some stage.
The new CSE does now give thumbnail images in some of the results along with some other features.
So check your Google CSE if you use one!
[s]Hmmm...[/s] You've posted in an old thread about my Google CSE setup for searching Freeola: SEARCH FREEOLA CHAT.
I'm guessing you are asking about a game? - so your post might make more sense and get a better response over in the
Games forum... :¬)

Thanks cjh.
Google CSE seems quite impressive; really the only requirement is that Google 'likes' your site and has indexed all your pages - but that should already be taken care of if you've got a proper web presence. I'd not done anything about my 'play' site - but since setting up the CSE I've started taking steps to get it indexed by the search engines. MS indexed it immediately (MS are always very quick!)and Googlebot came by the other day so my one page (home) should be indexed shortly.
Might start linking to some other pages sooon and get them indexed.
All good fun...

I've found Google to be pretty good and listing the Forums, the CSS Shorthand article I posted seemed to get indexed in less than a few hours ... guess Freeola have earned themselves a pretty high page rank.
I've just seen that MySpace (not a site I visit very often) are also making use of Google CSE.
For anyone else interested in setting up their own Google CSE here's more info from Google http://google.com/coop/cse/
NB. If your site is a charitable organisation you don't have to display Google's ads. See Google for more details.

Google likes Freeola - it's only a couple of days behind!
If I could improve things, I'd be a zillionaire like Larry & Sergey ! ;¬)
